Program Details
Danny and I are warm, welcoming hosts who love sharing our knowledge of the local area and English customs. We enjoy connecting with people from different cultural backgrounds and believe in the value of exchanging experiences and ideas.
You will be living with us as part of the family—much like a son or daughter who gives a helping hand.
We'll chat, watch TV in the evenings, and usually offer take you with us when we go on local excursions, and make recommendations of things you'll enjoy doing yourself. Since there is no ‘team’ of volunteers, this is a more independent role, so please keep that in mind when applying. That said, many of our guests have made friends with locals, often through social media, and the relaxed beachside atmosphere naturally invites conversations.
Your working hours are flexible, depending on both your preferences and our needs. Generally, help is required in the mornings during the week, with weekends free. Some volunteers prefer to complete their hours earlier in the day, while others enjoy spreading tasks out with conversational practice during breaks. Occasionally, we may need assistance on a weekend—typically a Saturday morning or, more rarely, a Sunday—in which case you’d have another day off in exchange. We appreciate flexibility when needed.
We follow a pescatarian diet (we eat fish but not meat), with most of our meals being vegetarian.
You must be comfortable with dogs, as Pancho, our sassy and demanding Chihuahua mix, will likely be part of your responsibilities—especially when I’m away visiting my mother in the north of England for a few days every 6–8 weeks while Danny is at work.
Activities & Shift
Our primary needs vary, but we aim to match tasks to your strengths. This may include garden / yard work, general cleaning, DIY projects, and other household tasks. We expect volunteers to be adaptable and willing to help where needed.
Most often, we ask for help in the mornings for up to 5 hours (including a break but not a lunch break). If you’re particularly focused and efficient, you may finish sooner. Your days off will be agreed upon in advance, typically Sunday plus one other day (usually Saturday, though a weekday may be possible). We do our best to accommodate your preferences so you can make the most of your time with us.
We have several glowing 5-star reviews from past exchange guests on a well-known platform. I’m happy to share screenshots if you’d like to see them. As with any review system, always consider the bigger picture—sometimes the issue lies with the reviewer, not the host!
