Waterfall & Banana Farm Construction Project

It's a beautiful place location and we are laid-back, kind and curious people. Please understand it's not super close to supermarkets or anything like that. It's about a 25-minute (beautiful) walk into town and to the beach and probably 30 minutes back as it's uphill.

We will work on various tasks. The bananas require some trimming off the dead leaves as well as weed control. We are trying to plant a ground cover and hope to expand the garden greatly. At the moment there are renovations going on with the bungalows, so it could be any number of construction-related tasks as well as building the outdoor kitchen & gazebo. Once bungalows are finished we will rent them out, thus cleaning when guests leave could be a task. We also propagate plants as we are trying to do a lot of landscaping for agrotourism.

We have some flexibility with the hours depending on when you wake but plan to work between 8-12:30 each day so that your afternoons are free.

Greetings! I'm Boyd and despite being in my 40's I still live with my mom (Valene). Recently, I started dating her cougar friend Julia, and now we all live together. We want you to come live with us too…in our zoo. My mom and I are originally from Montana but wound up across the Atlantic. Julia is originally from Texas and says "y'all” true to her origins. We raise organic bananas and are have planted various other fruit trees that won't be harvested for a few years. Unbeknownst to us we also started accidentally farming cherry tomatoes. We are in the process of learning about permaculture and hope to expand the garden further and landscape the waterfall. Hope to build a gazebo and possibly other things down by the waterfall to enjoy the space more. We are considering changing the banana plants/trees for avocados or something else as bananas surround us and the price isn't sustainable. That will be quite a lot of digging to remove them if that happens. I am a bit nocturnal and trying to figure this out as I go and often researching until 3 in the morning. We expect you to be self-motivated and be able to work independently without needing us to monitor that you are staying on task. We ask 25 hours per week of work, we don't micromanage. To equate some sort of equitable value, if you are lucky and have low standards on the island you can find accommodation for €40-50 per night, we figure we provide around €8-10 worth of food per day, based on 25 hours per week this equates to at least €13.50 per hour, (depending on your country this might sound like a lot or a little but it is close to triple what most people in Madeira make). We have some flexibility with the hours depending on when you wake but plan to start in the mornings Monday through Friday and we ask 25 hours per week, pro rated depending on when you arrive. Based on a week that starts on a Monday if you arrive on Wednesday you are staying 5/7 nights of the week so we would expect you to work 71% of 25 hours or approximately 17.5 hours. By having you work mornings, your afternoons are free to explore the island. We eat dinner together most nights. It will be a communal thing where several people make a dish so we can try new foods. Food provided, please forage for breakfast and lunch. We think we cook quite well, so far everyone has liked our food (especially us). My mom loves to bake and makes her own kombucha and a lot of banana bread. I've been cooking since I was a child and I'm sort of an experimental cook and if it disappoints, I add toppings until it tastes good. We currently have a spare bedroom with 2 single beds. Until the bungalows are finished, there are beds in the lofts of the bungalows. There is also a glamping tent available. And a compost toilet down below for more accommodation. There is a good chance you are sleeping in a tent at least some of the time. We plan to host 3-4 people at a time if possible. I love traveling, learning, hiking and swimming. Madeira has sea and levadas which are perfect for these things. I used to do photography: www.instagram.com/photographicart/ Happy to teach anyone photography who wants to learn. I don't travel much now so hoping by hosting people I continue to learn about the world.

Staying with Boyd and his family was definitely one of the best experiences I had volunteering! The place is especial and surrounded by nature, is peaceful and beautiful! They all made me feel like I’m home, they are very kind people. The room is great and the food is always delicious. I will miss waking up with this view and having this energy around. Grateful for my time here!

The best first experience from wordlpackers. The atmosphere, place, people.

Whole experience is beyond words. Lots of laughter, travel knowledge, insights about the world, and delicious food. If you want, you can learn a lot and take something meaningful for yourself—but it all depends on you. You can meet fellow travelers and build amazing connections. And the family itself makes you feel like part of a team, where your presence truly matters.

The experience in Madeira was good. The weather is very pleasant and the island is very touristy, so there's a lot to do. As for the tasks, they're mainly construction, as it involves renovating two bungalows and we also did some planting. The schedule and days off are flexible. The food is delicious and varied, Boyd and Valene are great cooks. Valene, Boyd's mother, is very kind, loving, and approachable. Overall, it was a good experience. Thank you for everything Boyd!
