Trickle Hill

Trickle Hill is a Hobby farm in the middle of the bush.
We have dogs, chickens and horses (3), and both are home most days- we work here !

We always have a lot of project on the go, so work for our helpers is mostly either maintenance (gardening, weeding, woodchopping/splitting/ stacking) or more complicated things like building, helping prepare areas for the next project, working on the next project, (which may be anything) or something completely different. We have a fb page with recent things happening here.

You will learn a LOT of new skills.
We take a personal approach- and like talking about your life, and what we have learned living ours- we eat together, and chat, about life, ideas etc.
If you are confused on what you want , with study, or life- we somehow seem to help people. Not sure how- but we get that as messages a lot from our former helpers :-)
But- We also have our plans and own things going, so work can be on your own, with your travel partner, or with us.

Trickle Hill / Cockatoo is about 50 km from Melbourne CBD, in one of the most beautiful areas of Australia *( and we have travelled quite a bit of it!)
We are 1 hour by car, 1.5 hr by PT from Flinders station, 15 minutes from one of the largest national parks, 30 minutes from the yarra valley with all its wineries, and we are very close to the Puffing billy- one of Australias most fun steam trains!!!
(but it is fun at home too :-) )

because of the work you need workable english(!) ( or Dutch)

We expect you to have appropriate insurance, and generally don't plan more then 2 weeks ahead (things can move really fast here, or extremely slow... :-) Please don’t apply for more than immediate to 2 week ahead stays- we will not know if we can host you. We are Dutchies, moved to Oz in '07, and after half a year of travelling, we found this wonderful property. We are working from/at home, doing "nothing" but working our butts off. Fencing, building, growing, surviving natural elements, and taking care of our animals (3 HORSES,DOGS, chooks, (pigs), guinea fowl, indoor BIRDS- we all had to learn it in the past years, and are still learning. As there wasn't much here, and our plans are big (and growing in number every day) we can always use, and appreciate help of enthusiastic people with initiative who want to share a bit of our life. Aukje: sculptor, Art teacher, ( ceramics and bronze, steel, cement, resin) permaculture designer, horse rider, mum, Arthur: everything!!! originally an industrial designer turned engineer turned farmer turned wise man who is good at giving life advice ( and Aukje rolls her eyes here :-) ) horse rider, wood craftsman, builder of everything, etc etc. We have 3 kids but by now they are old (?!) 26,23 and 20- so hardly home anymore. Our life seems to have become more chaotic because of it. LGBTI + and alegence is the norm here. So is neuro divergence . AUKJE is happy to teach some CLAY/ CERAMICS work to people who are helpful. Can teach (some) sewing, gardening, permaculture, painting, horse care, chainsaw, welding, homeopathy, ARTHUR can teach chainsaw, building, carpentry, metalwork , welding, car-maintainance, designing, etc etc... We both are visual and creative thinkers, but also very practical. We work hard, and make long days. We think out of the box, We have lots of life experience, and are happy to share our thoughts.

I was asked to leave without much notice, as they said I wasn’t a good fit for the role, so I had to make last-minute changes accordingly. I only had two more workdays left and was looking forward to getting out and exploring the local area. Toward the end, it felt like they thought they were doing me a favour, and I started to feel unwelcome.

I was grateful for the chats and the dinners, allowing me a chance to work, but overall, I wouldn’t count this as an experience I’d want to do again.

hi Abhi,

It is seldom we can’t do a week with a helper, but as we discussed at length, you were looking what you want in life and what your purpose is.
It is definitely not in farming, or practical work, as the flaunting of safety became a huge liability for us.
we wish you all the best.

Trickle Hill was a great place to live with lots of animals around. The dogs were lovely, the parrot funny and the horses, well I didn't exactly hang out with them to much but I they were nice and massive. The meals they cooked were great and definitely enough. The caravan I slept in was very cosy. Arthur and Aukje are nice people and they liked giving tips for life while we were enjoying dinner or having the pre-lunch break. There were many things to do even though I only got to do a little bit. The working times were pretty much what we agreed on.

I absolutely loved my experience at Trickle Hill! Besides gaining more experience in gardening etc. I gained more confidence in myself and my abilities. The communication was always easy and straightforward. Aukje and Arthur will not just give you a task, but will explain how it’s done correctly and why it is important to them, which was very helpful. But it’s much more than just getting the job done. It is about the exchange! I had such pleasant chats with them. On top of inspiring and interesting conversations you will get free life coaching and AMAZING food + endless cuddles with the dogs.

My stay at Trickle Hill was amazing. The house is very beautiful and is surrounded by nature. Aukje and Arthur are excellent people, and they are very flexible in terms of the tasks to be done and how to carry them out. I really had a good time working with them, and I learned a lot. If you like working outside, eating well, and learning new things, Trickle Hill is an experience you won't want to miss. Also you will never be bored since there will always be a dog willing to play with you.

This is an experience I would undoubtedly love to repeat. Time flew by far too quickly, and I wish I could have stayed longer. The hosts, Arthur and Aukje, are truly exceptional—so welcoming and kind. The food is absolutely delicious, and the daily interactions were simply wonderful. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay, and if you’re a dog lover, I’m certain you’ll have an amazing time too.
