Tortosa Animal Sanctuary La Barraka

If you love animals and nature, this is your place! It's in the middle of the mountain and except one little village nearby, surrounded by a big nature park called "Els Ports". The place was created as a self-supported DIY-farm and over the years turned more and more into a shelter for farm animals, also colaborating with the local dog shelter, fostering dogs with special needs...
There are stunning mountain views, but the mediterranean cost is also only 30 km away!

I lived a lots of years in Barcelona, doing artwork with the airbrush, tattooing and applying in social projects, until I decided to go back to nature and purchase a piece of land in the mountains, to build my little paradise and help animals in need... I'm running the farm for 15 years now, in former times there were up to 1-5 friends and volunteers living and working with me, but right now I'm on my own with all the work, and there are always around 30 animals to care for... This is why I need help, and everybody who comes here to care for the land and the animals is welcome to be part of the farm family!

If you are someone that has a side hustle on top of the volunteering commitment, it could be difficult to work with your laptop after the volunteer work due to time constraints. However, my experience in Sarah’s place is truly one of a kind. I learned how to milk the goats and I got to feed them. Everyday I looked forward of taking the dogs out & feeding the cats. Aside from that, I helped in cleaning the animal enclosures. I enjoyed our meals together. Place is offgrid, so keep an open mind especially if you’re not used to it (like me) because you can learn a LOT here. And have lots of love

Sarah is a caring, a great cook, and truly one of a kind. I learned a lot from her and felt inspired by her off-grid lifestyle. Living this way makes you think differently every day, especially about things like water and daily essentials. I also learned to enjoy the present moment by focusing on simple, everyday tasks. I got to milk the goats, walk the dogs (I already miss them!), and take Perla the donkey the fields. Experienced olive harvesting, which was amazing. And I picked up un poquito of Spanish thanks to Sarah and the two lovely people who joined us for the harvest, Eli and Kader.

Thanks to Chantal and her amazing friend Chloe we made a good olive harvest this year... We already miss them and Chantal's little sidekick Zack, who brought so much happiness to our pack of dogs ;)

Staying with Sarah and caring for the animals that live at the shelter was a fantastic experience, full of discoveries and wonderful times in company that I will never forget! Sarah was immediately welcoming and friendly with us: it was a real pleasure to meet her and be able to talk about so many things, creating a beautiful friendship!
As a lover of a slightly off-grid lifestyle, I loved the peaceful surroundings and, at the same time, the vitality of life inside the project. From the finca there is a wonderful wiew of the mountain and the possibility to do beautiful hikes in nature!! <3

Recieving help and good vibration from motivated, skilled and friendly people like Lorenza and Sari has been a real pleasure... I hope to connect the same way with other volunteers in the future :)
