Tharpaland Kadampa Meditation Centre

Volunteering at Tharpaland KMC offers a perfect opportunity to experience first-hand the Buddhist way of life within a vibrant community. There are many ways in which you can help eg. by joining in the day-to-day activities of the Centre itself, such as serving in the cafe, preparing guest rooms, food preparation, gardening or joining a renovation project.

We are located 30kms north of Berlin, situated in vast woodland, just outside the little village Schwante. Take this opportunity to be part of a diverse international community of Buddhist practitioners and volunteers, make lasting connections, and enjoy a meaningful break. Typically you will volunteer Monday to Friday but depending on the activity, it may also include weekends. Whilst some activities are not always strenuous you will need to be reasonably fit and active to come on a volunteering visit. You will have two days free each week when you can explore the surroundings or Berlin, or just relax in the friendly atmosphere of the Centre.

As a volunteering visitor you are welcome to take part in many of the spiritual activities at the Centre such as pujas, weekly teachings and meditations along with weekend spiritual events. Although we all speak English, the classes offered are all in German. We will provide free dormitory accommodation and three vegetarian meals a day. Your volunteering commitment will be 30 hours (usually spread over five days). The Centre is run by volunteers living at the centre, Tharpaland is a non-profit organisation. And of course you don't have to be a Buddhist to volunteer with us.

My experience at the Kadampa was interesting. The environment is great for learning about Buddhism, compassion, patience, forgiveness and spiritual development.

The daily schedule runs from 9:00 to 17:00, five days a week. The work is divided by gender: men usually support specific projects, while women are assigned to housekeeping tasks. Food is great.

The volunteer dormitory is big and shared with retreat participants on weekends, so the number of people staying there can vary.

I recommend it specially if you are looking for spiritual growth.

Thanks Kadampa and all the Residents.

The residents were super kind and interesting to talk to. The meals tasty and plentiful. The surroundings and buildings are amazing. Had the chance to join the prayers and classes.

The jobs was mostly house work (ordering, cleaning) and handyman projects (fixing, painting, digging). The responsibilities were clear and they offered flexibility. It was HARD work!

The hours where longer that expected, since lunch (1hr) and breaks (2x30mins) are not included. Not as easy as I expected to go to Berlin and back, used my days off for it.

Grateful and happy I had this experience <3

My experience at Kadampa was beyond amazing! The budhism classes and meditations happened every day in German - translated to English - and we can participate in all of them.
The environment is super relaxing, the accommodation is super confy and clean, the food served every day is fresh and healthy with many vegetarian options, on the weekends the Cafe is open and they have many delicious options on the menu, and the most important, the residents are the most kind people I've ever met! I'll never forget this experience!
