Teacher Nee's Daycare for Baby Geniuses

Teacher Nee's passion for child development can be seen the moment you meet her. She loves kids and seeing them grow and learn. The daycare is similar to the Montessori style, with the children learning Lao, English and sometimes French. The children are also introduced to learn math. But the main goal is to develop a love of learning and make them excited to try to activities.

Teacher Nee earned her degree in early childhood development and has worked for many school every since. In 2020 the school she was working for closed due to the pandemic. She and her American husband decided it might be time for her to open her own school. So that's what they did. The first year she only had one student the entire year. The following year she had 5, the third year she had 25, and last year it has grown to around 40. Her husband had recently heard about Worldpackers, and believed that there may be travelers that would enjoy teaching and playing with Lao children while exploring Laos. The idea is that travelers could have experiences with reading stories, planning activities, teaching dancing, playing games, or even teaching a language, it could be fun for all.

I had a fun time volunteering at Nee’s daycare. Nee and the staff were very nice and professional. The children were a pleasure to teach and interact with! It took me a few days to understand the routine and teaching tasks, but I soon gained confidence. The children are also very intelligent for such a young age and it was very rewarding to assist them in their learning and development. The accommodation and meals provided were also great.

Regarding the room and meals, everything was good. The older staff members were kind and willing to help despite the language barrier. But I didn’t feel really comfortable during this experience as I was treated a bit weird from the start by the others staff members for a certain reason I understood later. I experienced multiple issues that was met with a passive-aggressive attitude, which was frustrating… Also, the advertised hours (19h) were not respected it was more like 25h. I don’t have lot of space to explain everything so feel free to contact me to know more about my experience.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We’re glad the accommodation, meals, and support from our senior staff were positive aspects of your stay. Early on, it became clear there were challenges related to expectations, communication, and fit in a shared living and working environment. We made an effort to be patient and address concerns constructively, but the experience did not develop smoothly. While we aim to support every volunteer, the program is not always the right fit for everyone.

This opportunity was one of a kind. My first volunteering experience and I will remember it forever. Teacher Nee and all the staff are incredible women with such kind and patient hearts. I felt so welcomed and accommodated. The living space was great, it had a comfortable bed, decent bathroom, kitchen to cook and the location of the school is in a very local part of the city. Breakfast and lunches were always delicious and filling. The children were so sweet and respectful and so smart for their age. I would absolutely recommend this experience to anyone interested.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at teacher Nee’s daycare. The children were delightful and the staff were very kind and welcoming. It was a great experience to immerse in the culture and get to know Laos. It is truly a lost gem in Asia. I am so glad that I decided to sign up for Worldpackers and go through this experience because it is truly one that I will remember forever. The time and care that they put into the children is something I’ve never seen coming from America there is a lot of love and patience involved and to capture a lot on film and pictures for my memories.
