Sembalun Belajar

Sembalun Belajar was born out of community concerns about the lack of positive activities for children outside of school hours. Many children spend their free time watching their phones, without opportunities to develop their interests and talents. As an effort to address this issue, Sembalun Belajar aims to provide a fun and beneficial learning space for children, with English classes designed to improve English skills, and sewing classes aimed to develop children's creativity and provide useful life skills.

There are many community activities to engage with outside of the volunteering role, if you would like to learn more about authentic village life.

There is option to help on the family farm, learning about and being involved in the local farming process. Here, we can harvest crops together, such as chilli, edamame, and strawberries which we can later prepare and cook together as a family.

I also run a social enterprise project called Sembalun Handmade, which aims to preserve the traditional weaving heritage of Sembalun, ensuring that production processes are ethical, valuing women's work, and maintaining harmony with nature. We can visit a traditional weaving village together, where you can learn about the process of weaving and the importance of this to the local culture.

Sembalun is surrounded by beautiful nature and is the perfect location to start many hikes, including the infamous Mount Rinjani. There are also many smaller hikes that can be completed in one or two days, like Anak Dara and Pergasingan Hill.

Activities: Daily activities include teaching English, as well as teaching one sports lesson, and two English lessons a week. Here, you have the opportunity to create meaningful connections with the children, through teaching and play. In your free time, you can immerse yourself in local culture and enjoy the beauty of Sembalun. We would love to show you local life! Rules: As you are staying in a Muslim village, we kindly request that you wear appropriate clothing, such as T-shirts and trousers /long skirt. We welcome married couples, but cannot accept unmarried couples due to our religion. Thank you.

Teaching English to the kids takes less than 2h/day, but the opportunities to help/learn are infinite. Any /skill is useful. The community wants to learn from you and wants you to participate to their social life. I felt very welcomed by Dwi and her family, friends and neighbours. Dwi is more than a host. She provides a full local experience. She taught me much more than what I thought her and the kids. They treated me like family. I even got invited to several family gatherings. I just wish I brought more teaching materials/books. Unique Lombok cuisine, but don’t forget to boil the water

I have found a second family in Sembalun!
Dwi is an amazing host and so passionate about her projects for the community. She integrated me into local life, attending family meals, where I was welcomed warmly and ate the most delicious food. I also learned about farming, harvesting chillis and edamame, preparing these with the extended family and learning to cook local dishes.Dwi also showed me a rural farming village and the traditional weaving technique.
A truly authentic and culturally enriching experience (and the children are amazing)!
