Mater Natura

The farm welcomes eco-conscious travellers and offers the opportunity to share knowledge and learn about sustainable life-style choices, no-dig vegetable gardening, food forests, composting and biomass recycling. We are always keen to learn about practical ways to reduce our carbon footprint and the life-style changes that can be made to do this.

Local authorities consider volunteering to involve work and thus regulated. To comply Mater Natura has been set up as a non-profit cultural association to provide education and promote ecological awareness through 'learning by doing'.

The farm covers three hectares (nine acres) with traditionally planted olive trees, a vineyard, fruit trees and a magnificent area suitable for vegetable gardening. We have set out to transform a traditional farm into a self-sustainable one based on regenerative agriculture and permaculture practices. We believe it is essential to learn to live in harmony with nature and have set out to create a sustainable self-sufficient community built by and for eco-travelers - a survival lifeboat for when the consumer economy is no more. Mater Natura is a non-profit cultural association set up to educate and promote ecological awareness through 'learning by doing'. Tiziana, Jorg and Shak are the association's officers. The annual association membership fee is €5.

I had the most amazing experience during my time in Magliano Sabina. The host Shak was extremely accommodating and was super amazing with taking us around the area and immersing us in the local community.
Tasks during the day were relatively flexible and Shak was always making sure we weren’t over exerting ourselves. We often had enough down time after a day on the farm which was amazing to reconnect with nature.

Highly recommend this wonderful experience! From the first day I felt at home, the house is a beautiful place and the accommodations are incredible, food was always awesome and vegetarian. While volunteering here you truly get to experience nature and Italian countryside. Shak was a super host through and through! He guided as everyday and in every activity, I learned many thinks from him, also invited us to join him in his adventures and events, which made me experience true Italian culture. I’m very thankful to have been a part of this project and hope I can come back sometime!
