Mater Natura

The farm welcomes eco-conscious travellers and offers the opportunity to share knowledge and learn about sustainable life-style choices, no-dig vegetable gardening, food forests, composting and biomass recycling. We are always keen to learn about practical ways to reduce our carbon footprint and the life-style changes that can be made to do this.

Local authorities consider volunteering to involve work and thus regulated. To comply Mater Natura has been set up as a non-profit cultural association to provide education and promote ecological awareness through 'learning by doing'.

The farm covers three hectares (nine acres) with traditionally planted olive trees, a vineyard, fruit trees and a magnificent area suitable for vegetable gardening. We have set out to transform a traditional farm into a self-sustainable one based on regenerative agriculture and permaculture practices. We believe it is essential to learn to live in harmony with nature and have set out to create a sustainable self-sufficient community built by and for eco-travelers - a survival lifeboat for when the consumer economy is no more. Mater Natura is a non-profit cultural association set up to educate and promote ecological awareness through 'learning by doing'. Tiziana, Jorg and Shak are the association's officers. The annual association membership fee is €5.

I truly enjoyed my time at Mater Natura! The place has a welcoming, relaxed vibe and is often filled with good music. The work, including routine housekeeping, pruning, feeding, planting, etc, is reasonable and varied. I also had the opportunity to do some fun craft projects. The accommodations are comfortable, and meals are delicious. The property has stunning views and Shak also took me to a few beautiful historic towns. They also have two lovely dogs and the cutest, most affectionate cats. I would recommend it to anyone interested in farm life and litalian culture.

I had a lovely experience at Mater Natura. The hospitality was divine as I had my own clean room, I was fed 3 delicious home made meals and I had access to the peaceful farm to enjoy during free times. I worked on the farm for a couple hours in the morning + house chores and I had free time to enjoy the green oasis for the rest of the day. Shak was great comapny as he jammed out with us and brought me to nearby Italian towns. Mater Natura is a beautiful place and I totally recommend if you want to experience a eco conscious community with structure.

I loved my time at mater natura! We did couple hours of outdoor tasks in the morning and afternoon was free excluding some household chores. So over all a very chill and relaxing work schedule. Its a perfect place to explore farmlife and its incredebly revarding to get ingredients from the land. Animals on the farm are the cherry on the top. I found myself in peace here, would recommend to anybody.

I had a wonderful time at Mater Natura. I stayed for only two weeks, but I would have loved to stay longer. The work was enjoyable, peaceful, and always varied. The animals were well-behaved and so sweet! Shak and Tiziana are outstanding hosts. The food was delicious and Shak was generous with his time, showing me so many local towns or giving great suggestions for other places to visit. There is a home cinema with a range of interesting films, and Shak also provided materials for me to paint. I felt connected to nature, while also inspired by food and the local heritage.I’d highly recommend!
