Hostel Vagabond

There is a dream of freedom. There is a life devoid of fear. There is a desire to explore new places and meet new people. There are people who live this dream. They are called adventurers, wanderers, urban nomads or vagabonds. Those who judge them don’t truly understand them. Vagabonds steer clear of them. Those who understand them admire their courage and share their commitment. Vagabonds cherish such company. Vagabond Hostel is the place!

Vagabond is located in the very epicenter of all activities, in the central pedestrian zone of Ferhadija Street. We are less than 50-step walking distance from the old town area – Baščaršija, Turkish Ottoman-style bazaars, numerous restaurants and cafes. Despite of this, Vagabond is proud to be able to offer a perfectly quiet and calm refuge from both day-time and night-time street noise, which makes it a perfect choice of urban nomads.

This hostel is a small friend run business. Our staff are not our staff, but family members. As we feel that atmosphere is important at work (to feel at home), our guests feel it as well and it has shown to be a very successful combination.

I loved my time at Vagabond. The staff are great people. When you work with them, they will do the bulk of the tasks. The tasks left for you are very simple and not taxing, it truly is a volunteering in that aspect. Even though the work is very laid back and doesn’t “feel” close to 30 hours, I do think 30 hours a week with no meals is a lot. We got amazing guests every day which I loved, something about Sarajevo and Vagabond attracts the nicest people. The volunteer room is great. Overall I definitely recommend!

Espero volver!

Denis, Aida, Alissa and the other volunteers were incredible. Sadly, I left early because Ivan, the owner, made things difficult. He is not allowed by law to have volunteers in Sarajevo, as he told us. He was unapproachable & unwilling to listen to suggestions. Shift schedules were always delayed and even after finishing our tasks early, we weren’t allowed to leave and he created things to do. The first week I worked 7 days straight. Volunteers deserve respect and clear communication—two things that were clearly missing. Hosting volunteers requires more responsibility and basic human decency.

Volunteering at this hostel felt like a home, the hosts were beyond nice they truly made us feel like we belonged there! The tasks were so easy and even if we did have questions everyone was happy to help, there was no such thing as a silly question. The hosts also gave us great recommendations on what to do on our days off, where to eat good Bosnian food and they even taught us a few Bosnian words! Thank you Denis, Ivan & Alysa for your hospitality :))
