Hampton Farms

Nova Scotia is one of Canada's prettiest provinces, and is known as Canada's Ocean Playground. My farm is near lots of great hiking opportunities and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs.
My farm is very peaceful, the animals are very sweet, and I'm told that I'm an interesting host.

Namaste! Thank you for stopping by. :-) I hope you will join me on my journey for a month, 2 months, or long-term. It's just me here. :-) I'm a bit eccentric, but I hope that you'll find me to be a very caring person. So, if you're a little offbeat, that's not a problem for me. I am supposedly an excellent cook, and I make sure my volunteers eat well. One of my quirks that I should mention, though, is that I cannot abide any amount of food being wasted. I have a pair of picturesque, riverfront hobby farms, each with a large 4-bedroom house. I am transitioning the farms to more of a communal space. There are three acres of wild blueberries that I am currently converingt to organic production, six acres of pasture, and about eight acres of woods that provide more than enough firewood to heat both homes without having to clear-cut any areas. I have a small herd of alpacas and an even smaller flock of chickens, whom I allow to free range. We harvest a small portion of our food from the property, and my vision is to increase that slowly and steadily every year. For a long-term (and possibly lifetime) stay, I would particularly interested in these 3 individuals: 1. Someone to manage the livestock, including monthly shots for the alpacas 2. Someone to process and market the alpaca fibre 3. Someone to manage the little antique shop Once the right long-term partners/cohabitants are found, I'm open to expanding our activities to include: -bee-keeping (which will also help pollinate the blueberry field) -developing blueberry condiments and other blueberry products -permaculture -large vegetable and herb gardens -art studio, as there are a lot of tourists here in the summer ...and it is always nice to have some company, instead of just me and my sweet cats roaming around this enormous house. Were you to stay long-term, I would give you a share of the farm profits, but it's a small farm and you'd never make your living from that. If/when the two homes ever become full, I plan to start building tiny homes on the property. I am amenable to stays as short as a month. Longer term stays would depend on our shared chemistry. I would love to live happily ever after with about 5 or 6 kindred spirits. I am LGBT-friendly and open-minded about various lifestyles. (I am personally pan and polyamorous.) That said, this is a very culturally conservative area; so, guys .... please don't arrive in a pink sweatsuit, and guys and girls .... go easy on the personal pronouns. I keep to myself a lot, unless we are really clicking amazingly. Over the years, from various volunteering sites, I have hosted over 100 volunteers. Many of them have become long-term friends and, in rare cases, we have developed an even closer connection. I have been vegetarian in the past and try my best to cater to dietary restrictions. If your diet is too complicated, I'll get you to do most of your own cooking. Both houses are strictly non-smoking. I'm always in need of a helper here at the beginning of June for the annual shearing of the alpacas. It's a strenuous day that needs an extra pair of hands.

If you're looking for a Canadian experience. I 100% recommend Hampton Farms!
From my arrival i have felt nothing but comfort. It is very quiet and quaint, and if thats what you're needing. This is the perfect experience.
The work is very easy, and you do what you're best at. For my first Worldpackers trip I wanted to feel safe and sound. This was exactly that, and more! I would definitely come back! The animals are super sweet, the landscapes beautiful, the food Arthur made was amazing, house is super cute and rustic. There is really no complaints! Thank you Arthur for the amazing time!:)

As my first worldpacker experience Hampton Farms was the perfect place. If you want to get away from cities and many people, or connect with animals and nature, this is the place for you!
Art is a very kind and accomodating guy (with awesome cooking skills) who explains your tasks to you and then trusts you to do it well. Of course you can always ask him if something is unclear.
In winter, the house is quite cold but you get used to it and when the furnace is on it gets really cozy.
The tasks aren't hard, I especially liked taking care of the animals. I'm gonna miss the sweet Alpacas and Luna.

My unfortunately way too short time at Hampton Farm was better than I could have imagined! It was my first worldpacker experience and I realised here how nice it is to help other people and work with the animals.
Art is a wonderful and kind person and I had an unforgettable time with him..
he is a very great host and you can learn a lot from him and, be the way, he is an amazing and talented cook! (These plantings were awesome :))
I can heartily recommend everyone to experience the real farm life on Art‘s Farm :)
Thank you! <3

I'm flattered and humbled by the kind words, Paula. Thanks for showing the new volunteer your excellent fibre carding technique. You will be missed.

HamptonFarms was a unique and beautiful experience to remember. The alpacas/chickens were great and learned alot about their care. I appreciate the fact that work activities were largely up to the helpers and you could elect to do outdoor tasks, or opt for fiber activities indoors. The hikes around the property were the best part as the location is rather remote&difficult without car. The WiFi is testy at best. Arts cooking was amazing and you never go hungry. The main challenge @ farm would largely be adjusting to the unique household standards and responsibilities of a rustic farm life.

The farm was a good place to go if you want to disconnect from everything and learn a thing or two about caring for alpacas! Art is a great cook and there was always plenty of meals available. Only issue I had at the farm was the lack of transportation, no fault of Arts, as there is no public transport or anything near by so all exploring had to be done walking, which was very isolating but if thats what you're looking for perfect. Art is good at making sure he finds the right task for each volunteer so you're not stuck doing somthing you hate.

Thanks for all the great work, Mhairi. The brush cutting you did along the river was as though a machine had gone through there. :-) I also really appreciated how you cut up some stands of birch trees that blew down in a hurricane years ago. You transformed an eyesore into a few months of firewood for me.
You're a kind and sensitive person, and I wish you all the best in your travels.
