Friends of the Skyrian Horse
Hi Potential volunteers and welcome. In volunteering with us you will be helping a genuine cause that is based on service to animals rather than to self... If this appeals to you drop us a line. Our registered non profit project will allow you to truly contribute and make a difference to a genuine conservation and welfare organization and help a rare and critically endangered breed of pony the skyrian pony who are fabulous characters. You will also be supporting and caring for 3 rescue dogs and 14 rescue cats. The project offers you a safe although basic haven to explore the island and get to know a little about real rural Greek island life. Skyros is a powerful island, beautiful and unspoiled by tourists , a wild place and sonewhat lost in past times, the farm is rural and quite isolated , a great place to retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. We are in walking distance to the sea, an ancient archeological site, and a good taverna. Please do note we do ask for a volunteering commitment of at 6 weeks and preferably to have real experience with ponies , horses, gardening ,maintenance or farm life .
Finally the farm and accomodation is very basic , not at all modern, so please do consider this when applying. Thank you ☺
Our project was set up by Stathis a skyrian artist/ potter and Amanda a community artist and movement therapist. Amanda is experienced with ethical and natural horsemanship and has many skills to offer in this area. We have been running the project since 2006 and have hosted over 300 volunteers, from different organizations and the horse world, many of who come back year after year and have become like a family. We usually have 2 to 3 volunteers at the farm, without volunteer support it is challenging to care for our herd of 34 endangered breed skyrian ponies. We expect volunteers to muck in, be mature and self-motivated, be happy to help physically for 4 to 5 hours a day, and in exchange, we offer a safe haven for both animals and people to grow and develop and have space to reconnect to nature and find the time to find what inspires and drives them, whilst also learning about the commitment it takes to care for animals well. Please do note we do ask for a volunteering commitment of at 4 weeks and preferably to have real experience with ponies or horses or farm tasks.
