Education Center For Community (ECC) Cambodia

Susadei Worldpackers!

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children in Cambodia?

My name is Savuth and together with my wife, Savon, and daughter, Channa we run an education center in the village of Po, located a 5-minute walk from the local market, and just 15 minutes by car from the center of Siem Reap and 30 minutes from the famous Angkor Wat.

We opened our on-site center in 2014 to provide free additional education to the children in the local community, including free English classes for 100 students. In the following years, we started providing teachers for the primary and secondary public school which hosts over 2,000 students combined, ranging from 6 to 16 years old.

ABOUT TEACHING
Volunteers are currently able to teach at our on-site center, which is open both before and after school to provide additional help to students. Additionally, volunteers teach at the primary and secondary school, which is located about a 10-minute walk away. Typically, you will teach for an average of 3 hours per day, although depending on your availability and the number of volunteers staying at that time, you may be asked to teach for up to 5 hours.

The majority of our classes are conducted in English, so all volunteers must have at least a conversational level of English ability. However, please do not worry if your English is not perfect, as any assistance is greatly appreciated.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT As a volunteer, we would be delighted to have you stay with us in our home, learn about the local culture, and make a positive impact on Cambodian development. We offer dorms for our volunteers which includes free WiFi, fans and three home-cooked meals a day. We ask for a donation of $8 per day for the dorm room. You'll only be 15 minutes away from the local market, night market at Pub Street, floating village, lotus farm, and rice fields. And if you're interested in visiting Angkor Wat, it's just a 30-minute drive away. To get around there are also lots of cheap TukTuks available. We require a minimum commitment of two weeks from our volunteers, but staying longer will enable you to build a stronger bond of trust with your students and leave a lasting impact on their lives. With the help of volunteers from around the world, we've been able to improve the lives and opportunities of children from low-income families in the local community. We welcome volunteers to join us in making a positive impact on the lives of our children and community. We look forward to welcoming you to our family!

It was a great experience teaching English at the local school to all the different ages as well as in the afternoon school at ECC. The volunteers are the ones in charge of preparing what is gonna be teach in each class (except for some grades since they have their own book). The place is amazing, the food and the other volunteers too :)

IIt was a great experience to work with ECC again. I made so many international friends, and the host and his family were incredibly kind and welcoming. During the Cambodian New Year, we had the chance to learn a lot about the culture and experience many new things together as a group

Teaching at ECC was incredibly fulfilling. The children are eager to learn, full of energy, and their enthusiasm made every lesson special. Managing a large, talkative class was challenging, but seeing their progress was heartwarming. The school is in a poor rural area, and both the facilities and accommodation are very basic. It’s a stark contrast to Western comfort, but for me, it was eye-opening and humbling. If you're ready to step out of your comfort zone and make an impact, ECC is a great place to volunteer!

We truly admire your dedication, especially in managing a large class! Thank you for stepping outside your comfort zone and giving so much of yourself. My experience at ECC was great. The kids are lovely and eager to learn and the other volunteers where amazing.
At the school, volunteers have full control over lessons, materials, and division of schedules being that there is no real teaching plan for the children to follow nor teachers to refer to for lessons (it is good to be many since there are two hours of class in the morning and three in the afternoon, plus an additional hour for kids who want to improve their English outside of school in the late afternoon). The house is spartan but the ladies who take care of it are very helpful!

Teaching at both ECC and the local primary school was an amazing experience! The children are adorable and eager to connect and learn with you. I was lucky to be part of such a wonderful group of volunteers, which made my time here even more enjoyable. Since the program is volunteer-led, they were also the ones who explained everything about the place and the teaching, which was really helpful.

Savon and Savuth have lots of lovely dogs that are always happy to play – or to function as an early morning alarm clock!
