Characterful home

You'll have the opportunity to live in a comfortable family home, built around 1895, so in the 'Victorian' period of UK history. My home is in a neighbourhood typical of the time. Lincoln is an historical city with a Cathedral and a castle. Lincoln was a retirement town for Roman soldiers 2,000 years ago and there are still Roman remains here, including the oldest archway which is still driven under by cars (I go under it most days!). There are courses for heritage crafts at the Cathedral so stonemasons, glaziers and lead workers who work on similar historic buildings stay here. There is also a strong tradition of choral singing at the Cathedral where you can hear sung Anglican services every day. We are only about 50 kms from the east coast of England and can easily reach other places of interest, such as York, the Peak District, Nottingham, Sheffield and Leeds.
My position is not arduous - I'd like help getting organised and tidying cupboards and storage areas where there are too many things. Some cupboards and areas of the house need painting and I'd like help with that. I have a lot of pictures I'd like to frame and hang, an attic that needs emptying and a garden where I want help to prune and plant some things in the spring. One of the decks in the garden needs replacing. Alternatively, it is covering an old air-raid shelter from World War II, so we could empty the shelter of earth etc and restore it so that people could come to visit it! That sounds like a really interesting option actually! I've only just thought about it! I also have a 4 year old black Labrador (LouLou) who likes long walks on the nearby Common and, if you like dogs, perhaps you could walk her too. Are you the person (people) to help me sort my life out?

I'm a widowed mother of three grown-up daughters, two of whom have children and the third one is travelling the world. I live in my 4-bedroom house with a lodger and my Labrador. I also do Airbnb, but probably when you are here there wouldn't be Airbnb guests too. Although I'm old enough to retire, I still teach part-time. I've taught English all my life, so I'm happy to correct your English and give you exercises to do to help you improve with any problems you have with your English language, if you like. I have a cleaner every week, (. . . but perhaps you could help with some of the spring-cleaning projects that we don't often get round to, like washing paintwork and ornaments and taking down the curtains to wash, etc?).

Getting to know Imogen, her home, and her lovely family has been a truly special experience.
The city is beautiful, and Imogen took the time to show me so many wonderful places and even helped me with books to improve my English.
She is such a kind and generous person, and Loulou is the sweetest Labrador :).
We worked together on the bug hotel, and the garden turned out beautiful :)
You and your family will always be warmly welcomed in Mexico.
Thank you so much! 🫶🏻👋🏻

What touched me most during this project was the connection we built with Imogen. She wasn’t just our host — she was like a heroine in our journey. She thoughtfully prepared meals, explained cultural details with great patience, and helped us understand not just British language, but also British life. Her kindness and warmth made the UK feel much closer and more human to me. Imogen showed me a beautiful life balance — family, community, and personal joy. I hope to carry that spirit forward and become a kinder, more thoughtful version of myself. I wish her all the best!

I never imagined I’d meet someone as warm, kind, and inspiring as Imogen.
I still remember her bright, welcoming smile on the day I arrived. And just like that, fourteen days flew by. When Imogen took me to the train station on the day I left, I turned away, quietly saying goodbye in my heart to this little corner of Lincolnshire — and to all the kind souls I met here. Before I knew it, tears were falling.
Thank you, Imogen, for all the care, kindness, and support. I think I will always remember this short but heartwarming summer holiday.

Imogen is the most wonderful host I could have wished for. Hospitable, helpful, interesting, inspirational. From fetching me and returning me to the train station when I arrived and left, to sharing her days and local trips and sightseeing with me, to making delicious meals and ensuring my time was really well spent, volunteering with Imogen was a truly fantastic experience.
The tasks were easy, enjoyable and rewarding, and it was a real pleasure collaborating with Imogen. I would gladly have extended my stay if I could have, and hope to return to see more of Lincoln and surrounds too.

This experience was awesome! Imogen is truly special. I was the only volunteer in a short stay, but I still got to meet other travelers. Also, Imogen invited me to experience her English lifestyle, I met her lovely family and learn about her daily activities. The tasks were simple, like walking her cute dog LouLou, laundry, general cleaning, etc., however, I would love to do much more, because the work hours were flexible and didn't count them. Imogen helped me to improve my skills in English, she is very patient. And she cooks delicious English food at dinner. I felt at home :3
