A little bit of magic

Our guest house is located within England's greatest city - York. The city itself is a giant museum with history stretching back thousands of years. There are hundreds of pubs and restaurants and plenty of attractions to keep you entertained during your stay. If you volunteer at our place you will meet people from around the world!

My wife Katrin and I have been running this guest house for a few years now. We are friendly people and like to have lots of fun with whatever life throws at us. We are looking for someone to help out at the guest house.

This experience wasn’t what I expected. There’s no paid staff, so volunteers do everything. The hosts have high expectations but provide little training. The shifts are 11-3, but you often have to stay late to finish the laundry. You don’t interact with the guests and there’s only 2 other volunteers. The beds are very worn down and uncomfortable, and the dorm is cramped (it’s not what’s shown in the photos, those are the rooms you clean.) They provide groceries, but the kitchen is small and smells quite bad.

York is lovely though and the hosts were understanding when I had to leave early.

My time volunteering in York was a calm and peaceful experience. I found a very special sense of peace in the city. The place is small but very cozy, and the work was straightforward, which meant I had plenty of energy left over to enjoy the day after my shift.
Johnny and Katrin were very kind and attentive to me, always making sure I was comfortable. Their polite way of communicating made me feel so welcome. My roommates became unforgettable friends, and we shared many precious moments together. The city of York is beautiful and full of history, and the local people are very polite and calm.

My experience was ok, I didn't meet the hosts but they seem to be good people. The place is not like in the photos, it's actually very small and the bed is uncomfortable. About the meals, they give you 40 pounds per week to divide between the three volunteers (which in my opinion is not enough). The working hours are ok

We never met Sara as she arrived while we were on holiday. Normally we go ourselves to buy the food but as we were away we decided to leave money instead. I'm sorry if it was not enough, if you would have let us know then we could have increased it. It was also never mentioned that the bed was uncomfortable and if you would have let us know then I could have replaced it.
I'm sorry you didn't have a 5⭐ experience with us and if only you could have communicated better then these two issues could

I had a good experience during my volunteer stay in York. Johnny and katrin were incredibly kind people, always attentive and willing to help with anything I needed

Also, the place is perfect if you want to explore a historic city like York. It’s full of history, culture, and amazing places to discover. I definitely recommend this volunteer experience to anyone who wants to enjoy a great time and discover one of the most beautiful cities in the UK.
