Build environments for rescued animals in Ecuador

We loved our experience here! A real opportunity to connect with the animals and staff. Some days you work a little more, some days you work a little less, and the team are always super supportive and show you exactly how to get the job done. The volunteer house has great showers, and my husband and I had a room to ourselves - there's also plenty of common space to hang out with the other volunteers and chances to hang out with the staff outside of working hours too! A very rewarding experience, and we would definitely (and already have) recommend this to others.

Zoorefuigo is an excellent experience, you deal with monkeys, birds, lamas, iguanas… on the daily, plus you get to watch the felines being feed. They also have an awesome team, the two zookeepers are wonderful, really easy going and made the experience so enjoyable we can't thank them enough. Plus the shelter go above and beyond, taking us on day trips where we had enriching experiences, we learnt about their culture and saw some beautiful landmarks. We would happily go again. Extra thanks to Fanny for being so helpful and understanding, nothing was to much to ask.

This experience blew me away! I was expecting to spend time taking care of animals and learning about animals in the rainforest, but I came away with so much more. I made some really awesome international friends, got to learn a lot about the history of the Amazonian tribes, and even was able to participate in cultural practices. Would definitely recommend to anyone willing to get their hands dirty :)

Fanny and William were great! As well as all the other workers at the refuge. Me and my girlfriend had an awesome experience and met amazing people. Fanny was very accommodating to the needs of all the volunteers and did her best to take care of us. Be prepared for the jungle! Bug spray, rain jackets, and rain pants are a must. Some of the work can be labor intensive as well so just keep that in mind. Otherwise I would recommend staying with them!

I had an amazing time in the shelter! It was my first volunteer exerience and stayed for three weeks, a time that I absolutely recommend. Fanny, the zookeepers and the animals (especially the monkeys and dogs ;)) are amazing! The work times and effort are as discussed, but you should also know that it is intense physical work! But nevertheless, if you don't want to/can't do something, everybody's understanding. So if you love animals, being outside and having good company, this project is for you :)

My first Worldpacker experience was amazing! The zookeepers have so much care for the animals and are really cool. My favorite highlight of my experience comes from laughing with the zookeeper and learning all about out the animals. I was a solo travel and my host family was welcoming and very polite. The meals that are provided are very good. The kitchen staff members are pretty cool too. :))

The zoo is beautiful and well maintained, the staff is very kind. You live at a volunteer home that is a 15 minute walk from the zoo. You get weekends off, but lunch and dinner are not provided those days. You can buy groceries locally and use the camp stove in the kitchen to cook up a basic meal. I stayed for one week and felt that was perfect for me, but there were other volunteers who had been there two months and loved their time. The tasks are repetitive, cleaning the cages and helping feed the animals. Some people enjoy the repetition because it allows them to perfect the skills.

The experience I had at Zoo Refugio the shelter was great. Made a lot of new friends and the staff is really kind and funny. Be prepared to speak a lot of Spanish though because the zookeepers doesn't know a lot of English. But communication works out great in the end as Fanny, the host, knows English very well and will care for all your needs. Truly recommend it!

I had a great time at the shelter, the hosts were very welcoming and the other volunteers were so nice. We had a house to ourselves about a 5 min walk away, and all meals were provided. The work was pretty easy, cutting fruit, feeding and cleaning. The staff were very nice and helped you at all times. The hours were respected and you have a good amount of time off to explore the area.
