Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary

Volunteering at our program is a fantastic way for travelers to have an amazing and memorable experience. During the week, you'll get to join in on exciting activities like morning hikes to see elephants up close in their natural home. This close connection with these incredible animals makes your time here much more than just a typical travel adventure.

Apart from the wildlife part, you'll also be part of the local community, engaging in community events and getting to know the area. Weekends are free for you to explore, allowing you to learn more about the local culture and way of life. Choosing to volunteer here means not just a trip but a unique journey where you get to enjoy nature, experience new cultures, and make a positive impact on both wildlife and communities.

Our team is composed of dedicated individuals passionate about wildlife conservation and community engagement. We understand the importance of creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for our volunteers. As for me, Cristina, I'm the Director of Kindred Spirit Elephant Sanctuary in Northern Thailand. Originally from the north of Spain, I have a background in Human Resources, biodiversity and conservation, tourism, and education. Since 2015, I’ve been dedicated to working with captive elephants, after an eye-opening experience that exposed the harsh realities they face. Since then, I’ve collaborated with NGOs, advised all kinds of elephant projects, and visited dozens of centres across Southeast Asia. I’m passionate about animal welfare, sustainable living, organic farming, and yoga (I’m also a certified teacher!). At KSES, we work closely to make sure everyone feels at home and leaves with unforgettable memories and meaningful experiences. We do our best to create a welcoming, supportive, and inspiring environment for all who join us. Volunteers can expect to be treated with respect and kindness throughout their time with us. Our staff is here to support and guide volunteers in their tasks, ensuring that they feel comfortable and confident in their roles. We foster a collaborative atmosphere, encouraging open communication and the sharing of ideas. Whether you are a seasoned conservation enthusiast or a first-time volunteer, our team is here to provide guidance, share knowledge, and create a positive and enriching experience for everyone involved. We believe in the power of teamwork and the collective impact of our efforts toward wildlife conservation and community well-being.

This was awesome! Getting immersed in a rural village like Ban Naklang was so beautiful, and I learned so much even though I was only there for a week! I highly recommend!!

Me and my partner have just returned from our 1 week at KSES, and we already want to return! We loved seeing the elephants returned to their natural environment, it was truly a privilege watching these beautiful animals interact with each other and the world around them. It was an honour to be welcomed so warmly by the Karen people and to learn about their lives and their language (Da Blue!!!!). The work that KSES does is so important and we are grateful to be able to have helped in any way towards their goals of educating and returning elephants to the wild. Thank you so much to the team!

I spent a week here at the Kindred Spirit Elephant sanctuary and it was definitely the best week of all my travels! The welcoming I received from both the Karen village and the amazing staff and interns was warmer than I could have imagined! The hike to the elephants every morning was beautiful and the ability to watch these once captive elephants roam through the forest, rivers and hills was very powerful. The experiences here are once in a lifetime and the work being done is incredible! I wish I could have stayed longer - thank you so much for having me here!

The work being done at Kindred Spirit is so important and inspirational. The elephants are well taken care of with the freedom to roam as they would in the wild. It was so cool to observe them and learn more about their behaviors, diets, and the crisis happening at elephant parks all over Thailand. It was incredible to see them be able to just be elephants. The gibbon program is also amazing, although we didn’t see too many gibbons. The Karen people are incredible as well!! So welcoming and generous. We got to cook with them and learned how to weave and make coffee with them. Forever grateful!

We spent a great week surrounded by 4 great supervisors, as passionate about making us discover their work as about making us discover a real community experience. These 5 days went by super fast, we loved living in contact with the community and the elephants! We recommend it to anyone wishing to experience something unique. Thanks to them again!
