Ronald Kvernmo

We follow an old Sámi tradition of treating our helpers as part of the family. The structure here is flat – everyone is equal. We don’t care if you’re male or female, young or old, dark or light – as long as you’re kind and not racist, you are welcome here.

Our winter season runs from December to early April, and we prefer helpers who can stay the whole period.
From April to November, we welcome stays from 3 weeks to several months.

We are a family-run company with 40 huskies. That means we really love dogs and spend a lot of time with them. Having many dogs is not just a job – it’s a way of life. You’ll become part of our family, helping care for the dogs, the children, and the nature around us. Life here is meaningful, full of fresh air, muddy paws, and unforgettable moments.

My time with Ronald and his family has been one of the simultaneously most challenging and most rewarding experiences of my life.
Working with the dogs can be stressful, but if you are looking for personal growth, this is the place to be.
The whole family is very warm and welcoming and I am sad that I have to leave them.

This is an experience I won’t forget and it was so much fun! It is what you make it. I had a great time playing games and working with the other volunteers and the kids. It is important you show respect and listen carefully and you may be able to learn many new things from dog sledding to using a snow mobile. Thank you so much for sharing stories and showing me the Sami way of life. I missed all of the huskies as soon as I had to go :)

I learned a lot about dogs and also about sami culture. Ronald and Beate were nice to me a expleined everything when I asked. I enjoyed the work with dogs. Some of them are shy, some want all the cuddles and some are running and jumping full of energy. The time scedule for the day wasnt always clear. There were times when no one said anything and we were just waiting while everybody was gone and we didnt know where and if we have free time or if there will be some task for us. I enjoyed the free weekends and Ronald was so nice that he even drove me to the nearest town so I could go on my trip.

Dear Kateřina,

Thank you for your kind words! We’re glad you enjoyed working with the dogs and learning about Sámi culture — they still remember you!

Outside the main season there’s naturally more free time, which most volunteers use to explore nature and the mountains. I agree that communication wasn’t always perfect, especially when things got busy.

You quickly became like part of the family, and sometimes messages just don’t reach everyone when phones are involved. 😊

The whole family made me feel included and I learnt even more than expected about dogs, sami culture and myself. You must be ready to have initiative and deal with stressful situations (load and active dogs). Be aware that the experience depends on when you are going - during or out of tourism season. Thanks a lot to all those who made this experience so awesome:)

Thank you, Nerea, for your kind words. 🌟 We are very happy that you became part of our family and that you embraced both the dogs and the Sami culture with such warmth and curiosity. You handled the challenges with a positive spirit, and your help was truly appreciated. We wish you all the best in your future adventures – and you are always welcome back, maybe even for a winter season. 🐾❄️
