Paseo de los Monos

Paseo de los Monos is the first wildlife sanctuary in the region, founded in 2002 with the mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and protecting animals affected by deforestation, illegal wildlife trade, and mistreatment. Located in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon, the sanctuary provides a safe and natural environment for a variety of rescued species, including monkeys, coatis, sloths, and birds, allowing them to recover and thrive in a protected space.

The sanctuary operates with a strong commitment to conservation, environmental education, and responsible tourism. Volunteers play a key role in daily activities, from preparing food and feeding the animals to cleaning enclosures, maintaining trails, and creating enrichment activities that stimulate the animals’ natural behaviors. Additionally, the sanctuary works closely with veterinarians and biologists to provide medical care and ensure the well-being of all rescued animals.

Beyond animal care, Paseo de los Monos is dedicated to preserving the surrounding ecosystem and raising awareness about the threats faced by Amazonian wildlife. A significant part of the funds collected, including volunteer contributions, goes toward improving facilities, expanding conservation efforts, and supporting local communities.

Volunteering at Paseo de los Monos is not just about helping animals—it’s an immersive experience that connects people with nature. Volunteers have the opportunity to explore the rainforest, swim in the nearby river, and bond with like-minded individuals, all while making a real impact on wildlife protection.

We are always looking for motivated volunteers who would love to help the animals at the center. It would be a pleasure to welcome you. The project is located in Puyo, in 2 hectares of primary forest and we welcome injured and orphaned animals, mostly monkeys. We have about 150 animals with seven species of monkeys, costis or cuchuchos, parrots, turtles, wild rodents and pigs and the first serpentarium in the province for the rescue of snakes. The "El Paseo de los Monos" shelter functions as an adoption center: orphans are placed in family groups according to species. The objective is to transfer the monkey troops to a virgin forest land near Sangay National Park with the corresponding research and previous studies carried out by scientists. We have a great dream, to acquire an extension of territory, free of hunters, deforestation, invasion and urban growth. The chronogram is as follows: By the land we have already visited. Build infrastructure for the animals and the people responsible for monitoring the project. Mobilization of the animals. Follow-up and monitoring of the troops by scientists. This center will be designed to receive all types of animals living in zoos and dispersed centers or other wildlife centers.

In the whole picture, everything was good and I had an amazing experience at the sanctuary. The staff that worked there were welcoming and helpful. It was truly a special experience to work close with the animals at the sanctuary in the Amazon jungle and I appreciated all the activities as well. I did not have any other expectations than what was described on the web, there was few things that I was not prepared for which could be an idea to clarify or highlight in the description to aware volunteers.
Otherwise I think it was a great experience and I’d love to do it again some time.

Worldpackers website developers (copywriters) need to cooperate with the place more closely. It is clear that info wasnt properly reviewed by host so its not 100% accurate what cause travelers having a little different expectations. And Paseo de monos can work a bit on cleaning, I understand its amazonia and bugs etc are normal there, but it can be reduced slightly by casual deeper cleaning of the property inside for bigger comfort of travelers who arent used for it. And missing hot water was probably biggest unexpected issue 🙏

The monkeys and nature were beautiful, but the conditions were far below what was advertised. The hostel hadn’t been cleaned in a long time - spider webs, dirty windows, bad smell, and even feces in the toilet when we arrived. No hot water for a week, and very poor communication about daily activities. I promoted this trip for months and felt embarrassed by the reality. This experience needs serious improvement before I could recommend it.

I absolutely recommend staying at Paseo de los Monos!! 💚
I only stayed for one week but I wish I could have stayed longer. Yvan welcomed me when I arrived and Nancy made me feel like part of the family. They provide food for all meals and we sleep in different dorms so that there aren’t too many people in one.
Above all, working with the animals is more than anything you could expect. The monkeys will give you so much love that it will be hard to say bye.
It’s the experience of a lifetime, thank you so much!

Felt at home! Comfortable and fun experience. I only stayed for a week so I didn't get super invested, but it was an interesting and cool to work with all the monkeys.
