Papa Sao Farm
Welcome to my small organic farm, situated in my Karen Hill Tribe village, Khoon Sab, between Paï and Chiang Maï.
My name is Papa Sao and I am Karen people.
In my farm you can live surrounded by nature and experience the daily life of local people. I will teach you permaculture, jungle survival techniques, karen clothes and how to use bamboo to build, cook and make instruments!
The work you do is 100% up to you. I love to welcome people to my farm, get to know their stories and share mine with them!
We have received a number of volunteers from around the world. Please be a part of our family. Be HAPPY - living the simple life on Papa Sao's Farm. What to bring? - Toiletries - Torch/Flashlight - Simple clothing / Sandals - Insect repellent - and HAPPY heart. Here, you can learn (by doing) about: - Karen culture and lifestyle - Organic farming, and fishing - How to use plants as food and medicine - How to make traditional clothes, baskets, music… - Karen Carving - Karen cooking with forest food! - How to be HAPPY in a simple life! - The amount of work you do and what is 100% up to you!

So grateful for the four days I was able to spend with Mama Sao. During the time I visited (early December) there wasn't really any farming going on, there weren't any other volunteers present, and Papa Sao had to be away for work in Chiang Mai, so I just got to hangout and enjoy a few quiet days in the fields with Mama - doing what I could to help prepare meals, learning how to make a Karen bag, and experiencing life with only the barest necessities. To enjoy the experience, you do need to be prepared to live without any modern conveniences, but these hosts could not be more welcoming.

I had such a rewarding and interesting experience at Papa Sao’s farm. The farm is so in touch with nature, and papa and mama sao are such caring and wonderful people. I only stayed a short time but definitely recommend staying longer if you have time, to immerse yourself into the lifestyle and get to know them better. I am grateful to have experienced this farm stay as a person who has stayed at way too many hostels and wanted a change of scenery and routine and to learn more. I wish the very best for both of them!!

My stay at Papa Sao's farm was amazing. I came across this place on a volunteering website worldpackers. In the world that is always rushing, this is like a little peaceful oasis where time seems to go slower. Everything is done slowly with enjoyment, yet all the tasks get done. It is a place where you can truly reconnect with nature. You walk in the jungle, eat organic food which you collect during the day, even sleep surrounded by the sounds of nature. Papa Sao treats you like family, with kindness and care. It was a top experience.

I can’t even put into words how good this place made me feel or how much I missed it the moment I left. Beyond the beauty of experiencing a simple life right in the middle of nature, Papa Sao is such a warm and genuine person. His wife Sawedee is just as same. I feel so lucky to meet them.
Papa Sao always does his very best for you. You stay in a small shelter.( not fully closed off on the sides but you have net and a beautiful scenery) The food is made with fresh vegetables that Papa Sao picks himself..He taught us so many things and gave us souvenirs to take home. Thanks a lot!

The stay was exactly as described, and Papa Sao is very welcoming and very nice. The surroundings are beautiful, and we even went to a small waterfall. If you're looking to get closer to nature, this is the place!
