Finca Guival

As a volunteer, you’ll experience full immersion in Costa Rican culture by working directly with Spanish-speaking locals, enjoying traditional foods, and exploring the abundant nature of our region. The farm is situated in a secluded area at the top of the mountains in southern Costa Rica, with streams and rivers on both sides, making it an ideal place to recharge. There’s a possibility to ride the farm's horse, go whale watching during the season, and you have the freedom to take self-guided walks around the farm to explore—it’s very safe. There will also be 10 dogs to protect and alert you. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about self-sustainable living. At this farm, we focus heavily on sustainability, including composting, recycling, repurposing waste, reusing organic fertilizer, and using minimal chemical interventions.

My husband Alex and I founded and established Finca Guival. We are currently developing, remodeling, and expanding the finca. We have six dedicated workers living nearby and three full-time staff members who care for the finca and are available for guidance at any time of day. We have opened our home to brilliant minds who have visions and feel confident in sharing, expanding, and improving the finca in every way. We welcome suggestions to grow in all areas, including gardening, house maintenance, animal care, recycling methods, and more.

Our farm offers a variety of tasks that volunteers can support each day, depending on individual availability. These activities range from farm work, such as harvesting and weeding, to house maintenance and construction, including cooking, cleaning, and teaching our team English. There is a worker who cooks for the staff; however, it’s common for volunteers to be assigned cooking duties as part of their 5-hour shift, and they will be provided with ingredients. Meal times are typically at 9 AM, 12 PM, and 6 PM. Volunteers have access to their own mini kitchen, but access to the main kitchen requires going through a staff member. During weekends, cooking is done collectively among volunteers, staff, and myself to prepare breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as no staff member will be available.

Paired volunteers will have their own room with bunk beds or a matrimonial bed, while solo volunteers will have their own bed in shared rooms with other bunk beds. All rooms have a door and lock for privacy. There is one shared bathroom specifically for the volunteers. There is also access to the washing machine starting at 9 AM, so it can charge the solar battery until 2 PM, any day of the week. There is a spin dryer, and then clothes are hung on a drying rack.

There are also opportunities to meet the local friendly neighbors, who love to integrate volunteers and share their experiences. They have various offerings, such as cocoa trees where you can taste fresh cocoa beans and see the process of growing them. Some neighbors have cows, while others cultivate different types of crops.

If there are excursions during which volunteers are taken out, they will be responsible for their own expenses, including transportation, activities, and meals. We also encourage volunteers to share their culture through their favorite dishes, allowing us to learn and experience a bit of their world.

From start to finish, my experience at Finca Guival felt as if I came home from a long trip. Everyone living and working with the farm were welcoming and encouraging. They offered activities that connected me with nature and left a lasting, positive impression on the land.
Fanny motivated me to push myself when it came to practicing my Spanish speaking skills and embrace my Latinx roots without judgement. I'll hold onto that forever. Thank you!
Gratitude is shared amongst everyone intertwined in this community.
I wish the trip could have lasted another week; so I'll have to come back!

Fanny and Alex are incredibly kind and welcoming. Everyone on the farm is very warm and want to help you get the best experience, from Ricardo showing me the toucans at 6 in the morning to Ina cooking the most amazing food everyday. Fanny and Alex were both very patient with us as a group and if we had any needs or special arrangements, they made sure we were good. I had an amazing week.

I had a truly amazing experience at Finca Guival! The whole team is incredibly welcoming, friendly, and truly cared about our needs and making sure we had a positive experience. The views and meals were incredible as well. The schedule is really flexible, we learned a lot, and had plenty of time to ourselves. We also took day trips and at the end of our stay Fanny and Alex showed us around other areas of Costa Rica. I would highly recommend this experience! Thank you Fanny, Alex, Jose, Kim, and Alberto!!
