Dorms KL Bukit Bintang

Selamat Datang! Welcome to Dorms KL Bukit Bintang in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. At Dorms KL we would like to welcome backpackers and explorers from around the world to create a warm atmosphere to relax in. After the lockdowns ended we moved to a new property and reopened - we need your help to rebuild the vibes!

My name is Darcy Cardinal from Canada, aka the great white north. I started travelling just before the lockdowns and worked in hospitality for over a decade. Right now at Dorms KL we just have two staff members but we would like to expand our team to help out with a new bar and get people into the beds.

During my volunteering at the hostel in Malaysia I found much more than a place of service: living with travelers from different cultures allowed me to value hospitality as a bridge of respect and understanding, and every task, from the simplest to the most demanding, became an opportunity to grow in discipline, patience, and empathy; by sharing with the team I discovered that volunteering is not only about giving, but also about receiving lessons, friendship, and memories that transcend borders, confirming that serving with joy opens invisible doors and leaves lasting marks both.

This was my second time volunteering, and the experience was just as wonderful as the first. Everyone is so kind and always willing to help. I’d definitely love to return again after my trip to the Philippines!

I’ll definitely be coming back here again. I had a great experience. I met my guy Fabris when I first arrived, and he explained everything really clearly. The manager, Sunil, was also super friendly and made sure my schedule stayed flexible. Kuala Lumpur is a beautiful city with a really good vibe. Just a heads-up: make sure to bring an umbrella—it rains often!

Looking forward to being back soon.

I only volunteered at Dorms for a few days, and then moved to Step In, which has the same owner. Dorms was very quiet, it's not a very sociable hostel, although in a very good location - right next to Jalan Alor food street. Reception duties were easy. I really loved my time at Step In though. Reception was a lot busier and can sometimes be a bit chaotic, but it's not a difficult job. The hostel is close to Chinatown and it's easy to explore the city. I made a bunch of friends and would definitely come back if I'm in KL again.

Initially based on the description in their worldpackers page, I was meant to do 5-hour shifts for 6 days a week but when I reached, I was asked to do 7-hour shifts. It felt like a full-time job and by the end of it, I was exhausted with no energy to roam around or explore. When asked, they told me to push through till they get someone else but I'm in the city only for a few days and I couldn't miss my chance to roam around KL. So I left the place earlier than the agreed upon date. The staff are nice, owners are nice people but expecting volunteers to do the work of a full-time job isn't okay.

I understand your frustration, if the deal was for five hours then you shouldn't have been asked to work more, a deal is a deal.
I don't know what happened since I wasn't there at the time, but I can insure you that it's over because we have a new management and now all terms of our deals are strictly upheld because, again, a deal is a deal:)
