Help out at our eco-hostel in the Cambodian countryside

This was my first time volunteering so initially there was poor organisation with the hours and no clear expectations of what needed to be done. But I learned quickly that it was a chill hostel with small tasks to do such as doing laundry, cleaning out rooms, serving drinks etc. Pheak (the owner) would just tell you if he needs help with other jobs like in the garden. Pheak and his family are so friendly and it makes it such a homey atmosphere especially with the dogs! They cook delicious food for you and even teach you how to cook if you want to learn some Khmer food. I've had a great time!

We had a lovely time at Pheak's! He's a friendly guy, running the hostel with his wife. The place is relaxed and quiet, a good intimate setting to connect with some travellers and locals alike. But some initiative is needed here, Pheak doesn't take the lead when it comes to managing volunteers. When we arrived there was no rota or clear hours and volunteers were expected to just be around. Then we made our own rota and Pheak agreed to it and it was fine. So if you don't mind slight chaos and setting clear boundaries with regards to work/free time this can be a lovely place to be.

I spent a week at this hostel in Kampot, and even though there were only few tourists during my stay, it allowed me to take the time to get to know Pheak, his family, and the other volunteers. I met some wonderful people! Rosa and Kirk if you're reading this review 😘 Pheak , even if he wasn't always on site, is a nice person, human, who likes to share good moments with his volunteers. I would recommend this hostel to people who already have some experience of volunteering, so that they can contribute their ideas and help develop the hostel.

Pheak and Kofi are nice hosts. There is very cute dogs that you can play around with. Our painting task was really fun. Volunteering in the hostel during low season is very quiet time and we didn't meet other travellers or volunteers.

Definitely not what is promised. The host expects you to work much longer than the 20 hours per week. There was not a lot of actual work but we were still expected to be available for the whole day. So there is no free time to do anything somewhere else. Also no free drinks or tours as promised. Plus the place was quite dirty (moldy pillows, kitchen full of ants and other insects, nothing was cleaned before we arrived including the room we stayed).

I really enjoyed my stay at the hostel. Kofi and Phak are great hosts. I was there during the low season and the tasks were really few and simple: cleaning the rooms, checking in and out of guests, laundry and serving at the bar. Thank you for this time together! I hope to return 💘🙌🏽
