I spent two months at GHKI and I had a really good time. Essam, Naoko and the whole team are exceptional, welcoming and always supportive. I feel really lucky with the others co-volunteers. Good moments, made plans together and they made this experience so special. The work itself is normal hostel tasks with different shifts. The hostel is located in a quiet area near a beautiful park (Umekōji Park) and train station. I'm definitely going to miss it!! Thank you 🙏🏽

Wow, this one was hard to leave. I can advise you to go here. Essam and his team will welcome you with their warmth and generosity. The work is normal hostel work, and it is a great base to explore Kyoto and its surrounds. I was lucky to be with amazing co-volunteers which made a big difference. I will miss the laughter, shared meals, jokes and community feel of this place. Just be aware that you will be sharing a dorm with the guests, not the other volunteers. I felt that my work was appreciated here, which made it a positive experience. Until next time! Mata ne!

Great opportunity to meet people and explore Kyoto! Essam is a very friendly host, along with Naoko-san and Mika-san. And my fellow volunteers are awesome! :) The inn is in a very convenient location next to a train station. My one issue is that if you are staying for a month, you can't do reception, only housekeeping. This is fine of course, but it may be better in future to communicate this on the worldpackers profile. Other than this, I recommend if you're looking for a solid worldpackers experience in Kyoto!

Fantastic way to stay for a while in Kyoto and explore it as a resident and see all the sights. Recommend cherry blossom season. Work was easy and hours not too long - 4 hours for cleaning morning shift, 6 hours if you do the night shift, 8 days off a month but more if you do night shift. Nice beds and lots of space for luggage, many areas to chill out, well-equipped kitchen and fridge. Convenient place, 20 mins walk from station and easy to get bus and train and really nice park next door. Staff are lovely - shout out to Essam for all the jokes and good fun and Naoka and Mika for the recipes!

I spent a lovely 2 months at the the guest house. The hours of work were reasonable and we got paid for extra hours. The location near the station was convenient for day trips but a little far away from the main attractions of the city, which was the only downside of my stay. Other than that I can recommend this place.

GHKI was the perfect place to call home for my two months in Kyoto! It's comfortable and clean, well located, and Essam and the rest of the staff are so so lovely, doing so much to make you feel welcome. The hours are respected and you can choose to do extra for pay if you want to earn some money. The work is straight forward and the managers are so nice. I will really miss it here and hope I can come back one day!

It was a pleasure having Ella stay with us for two months. She is a diligent worker who worked very well with our team and easily picked up on how things work around here!

We would definitely recommend Ella as a worker for her future endeavors and will miss having her around.

I had a great time at the the guest house. If you do your tasks carefully and try to contribute to the hostel, the host Essam will be very grateful and helps you to have a nice time in Kyoto. I felt welcomed and respected, but helpers who do not do the tasks carefully, may have a different experience. It is mainly 4 hours of work 5 days a week as a group of 3 to 4 people. This includes about 2 to 3 hours of cleaning and 1 to 2 hours of reception. If you stay more than 4 weeks it is likely that you do less cleaning and more reception work. Thank you, Essam, Naoko and staff+ helpers (-:

I had a great time in Guesthouse the guest house thanks to the other volunteers. It was a good experience, the work is really easy and the staff is nice ! The location of the Guesthouse is a bit far from everything. You can be paid for your extra hours if you do evening shifts (but be sure you will get the right amount of money, we had some issues before).

I had a good stay in GHKI overall. There's a lovely park nearby and Kyoto station is only 15 minutes away. The staff are lovely and Essam tries his best, although just make sure you confirm what will happen if you work the evening shift (6 hours instead of 4) because some volunteers got paid, others got days off. The hostel is cosy and clean, you may get the odd bad guest but that's expected. Work shifts are either 9am-1pm (1-2 hours reception, 2 hours cleaning), 11am-3pm (cleaning then sitting downstairs until 3pm) or 3pm-9pm (nightshift). Message me for more details :)
