Friendly Receptionist in a stylish hostel in Bangkok Old Town

I just left early and feel like I've escaped prison. I now understand why I and another new volunteer replaced two others who left abruptly. This hostel has the three rudest, angriest people in Thailand as the manager, cook, and cleaner. They scowl, passive aggressively ignore greetings, avoid eye contact, and bark orders in Thai. Male volunteers either face sexual harassment from the 44 y/o manager, Summer, or are on her shit list. Females are also made miserable. There's a long term trans roommate volunteer who never speaks. The only kind smiles come from the two lovely workers from Myanmar.

I feel sorry that we haven't met and didn't have a chance to know you before you left. I have to say that the problem may be very sensitive between you and other staffs. I will manage them to better fit with everyone. Thank you for your time.

Great place, work was as described. Decided to leave early because I was offered a free place to stay in Bangkok, but would've stayed if it didn't come up!

I enjoyed volunteering at this hostel and staying in Bangkok for 1 month. Work hours were respected, and shifts can be flexible. Other volunteers were supportive as well. Not only the reception administrative work, but also we need to do kitchen hand as the hostel attaches the cafe, so I learnt something new. Housekeeping staff and cook don't speak English, but we could manage to communicate relying on Google Translate, and it was fun part! Thank you Effie for accepting me and giving me this opportunity. All the best for your business!

My experience was great! I applied for reception but they needed my help at the bar, Motu. I didn't have bartender experience so I felt I couldn't help that much in busy times making drinks, but I did my best with the other tasks and really enjoyed! There were always someone to make the orders and help, Wave, Soda or Effie herself, who I really enjoyed being close to, she's really nice, great with hospitality and very creative!! The whole staff made me feel welcomed and I'll miss them 💜 You have a lot of free time to explore and the location is really good!

I loved my time working at the bar! The team was amazing in teaching me all I needed to know about bartending whilst still making it fun and enjoyable. The shifts and hours were very reasonable and most of the time chill thanks to the full time workers there. I met amazing people, both other volunteers and guests, and had plenty of time to explore Bangkok outside of work too.

Great experience working in a relatively calm corner of Bangkok. My tasks were simple and involved checking people in and out and handling transactions. I already miss Book the manager and all the other lovely staff members. I met some amazing internacional volunteers aswell. The people made it a great experience! Definitely recommend!

I loved my experience in Bangkok. I met so many local people and made the best friends in the hostel. Effie and Soda are such nice and welcoming people, they always helped me and made my time even better. The other volunteers where really nice as well. I am already sad that I had to leave but I will definitely come again to Bangkok. 🤗

The hostel & Bike is a very special place where to spend the first volunteering experience. We had a couple experience and, since the shifts are planned for just one volunteer at a time, we had difficulties in managing our own free time together. This is why we decided to leave before of the defined period. However, there are no problems for solo volunteers to match with the hostel shift schedule. The hostel is very cozy and clean, it's a the perfect place where to meet new people and where to work remotely. Effie and the staff have been really kind with us, absolutely recommended.
