Law & Advocacy Volunteer/Internship Program – Nego Foundation, Malawi

Join us in Malawi to support legal aid, human rights, and community advocacy initiatives. Volunteers and interns will assist in legal research, community education, advocacy campaigns, and policy support.


What you offer

16 hours of help per week

Teaching Sports: Teaching or assisting the host, guests, or local communities in practicing sports or physical activities.

Social Work: Help with volunteer work in local projects and communities.

Elderly Care: Assisting and spending time with the elderly.

Child Care: Caring for, playing with, and spending time with children.


What you get

3 days off per week

Program Details

Program Description – Law & Advocacy Volunteer/Internship Program

The Law & Advocacy Program in Malawi is designed to provide students, interns, and volunteers with hands-on experience in legal practice, human rights, and community advocacy. The program focuses on improving access to justice, promoting human rights, and empowering communities through legal education and support.

Participants work alongside legal professionals and community leaders to engage in legal research, case support, policy review, community education, and advocacy campaigns. The program equips volunteers with practical skills in law, advocacy, and social justice, while allowing them to contribute meaningfully to underserved communities.

By participating, volunteers gain a deeper understanding of Malawi’s legal system, human rights issues, and community challenges, while helping to create tangible improvements in access to justice and community empowerment.



Activities & Shift

Activities & Shifts – Law & Advocacy Volunteer/Internship Program

Activities:
Participants will engage in a variety of legal and community-focused tasks, including:

1. Legal Research & Case Support: Assist legal professionals with research, documentation, and case preparation under supervision.


2. Community Advocacy: Participate in campaigns, workshops, and awareness sessions on human rights, legal rights, and access to justice.


3. Public Education: Help educate communities about laws, rights, and dispute resolution mechanisms.


4. Policy Research & Analysis: Contribute to reviewing policies, drafting reports, and preparing recommendations for community development and legal reforms.


5. Observation & Learning: Attend court proceedings, legal clinics, and advocacy initiatives to gain practical exposure.



Shifts:

Morning Shift: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Afternoon Shift: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Special Projects / Weekend Activities: Flexible schedule based on community needs or advocacy campaigns


Volunteers may rotate between different activities to gain broad experience, and all tasks are supervised by experienced legal professionals to ensure safety, learning, and meaningful impact.

To ensure a safe, respectful, and productive environment for participants and communities, the following rules apply:

1. Respect Local Culture and Legal Ethics: Treat all community members, staff, and fellow volunteers with respect. Follow local laws, customs, and professional ethics.


2. Punctuality & Attendance: Arrive on time for all shifts, workshops, and meetings. Consistent participation is expected.


3. Professional Conduct: Maintain a positive, professional, and cooperative attitude at all times. Avoid behavior that could harm the program’s reputation or community trust.


4. Confidentiality: Respect privacy and confidentiality of all legal matters, community members, and clients. Do not share sensitive information without authorization.


5. Substance Use: Alcohol, drugs, or illegal substances are strictly prohibited during program activities and on program premises.


6. Teamwork & Collaboration: Work cooperatively with staff, fellow volunteers, and community members to achieve program objectives.


7. Commitment: Fully engage in assigned tasks and activities to maximize learning, contribution, and impact.


8. Feedback & Communication: Share concerns, suggestions, or challenges openly with program staff to ensure smooth operation and continuous improvement.


9. Ethical Practice: Ensure all interactions with clients, communities, and stakeholders are ethical, professional, and culturally sensitive.


10. Safety First: Follow all safety guidelines and report any incidents or hazards promptly.
