Building a Self-Sustaining Urban Oasis
This exchange is an invitation to collaborate on our defining mission: demonstrating that a fully self-sustaining urban farm is achievable right here in the heart of Dar es Salaam. We are not just maintaining a garden; we are actively engineering an ecosystem that minimizes external inputs and maximizes resourcefulness.
We seek creative, resourceful, and energetic Worldpackers who are passionate about applying sustainable principles in a tropical, urban setting. Your contribution is vital to closing the loops on our farm system.
Activities & Shift
The Activities: Two Sides of Urban Sustainability
We require 25 hours of flexible, hands-on help per week (typically 5 hours per day, 5 days per week). Your time will be split between vital renovation tasks and the daily care of the urban farm.
1. Renovation and General House Help🔧
This collaboration is essential for improving our facilities and providing a comfortable environment for all.
Renovation: Assisting with painting, minor repairs (doors, windows, fixtures), basic construction tasks, and moving materials as we continuously upgrade the property.
Maintenance: Organizing and performing deep cleaning tasks around the communal areas to keep the house and gardens looking their best.
2. Urban Farm Activities 🌱
This is the lifeblood of our project and requires consistent daily care.
Aquaculture: Daily feeding of the catfish and koifish and learning to monitor and maintain water quality in our specialized systems. 🐟
Horticulture: Tending to our crops—primarily tomatoes and other vegetables—as well as the essential care and cultivation of our aloe vera plants.
Chicken Care: Daily feeding, watering, and general cleaning and maintenance of the chickens and their coop.
Rules
Home Life and Essential House Rules
We welcome you as family, but we maintain a few guidelines rooted in local custom and efficiency:
Cultural Respect: We ask that you dress modestly and respectfully when leaving the house, particularly when visiting local markets.
Conservation: Please be mindful of water and power use, as conservation is essential for the farm's survival.
Communication: Kindly let Masanja or Sophia know your general plans if you are heading out for the day or overnight—this is for safety and courtesy.
