Program Details
Become part of a truly meaningful volunteer experience at a cozy charity café in Khon Kaen that supports Baan Luuk Rak - the “Home of Beloved Children.” Founded in 2000, this family-run orphanage shelters around 45 children in need, offering them a loving, supportive community where they’re homeschooled, learn life-skills like gardening and cooking, and receive encouragement to pursue education and future careers.
Two amazing young adults from the orphanage, Poon (25) and Bom (26), used to run the café full-time but are now studying at university - and you’ll help cover their shifts while they’re in class. The café is peaceful and not too busy, but your presence keeps it going. All profits are donated directly to the orphanage, where you’re warmly welcome to spend time with the children. You’ll stay in a cozy private room above the café with your own bathroom, full kitchen access, and excellent local amenities nearby: a daily market, 7-Eleven, massage studio, nail salon, laundromats, and more. Your host, Jicki, speaks fluent English and will make you feel like part of the family. Poon and Bom don’t speak much English, but they’re so kind, and always up for a laugh or a game at the café.
Activities & Shift
Volunteers help prepare drinks like coffee, matcha, kombucha, and more during calm, friendly shifts at the café. You’ll contribute around 15 hours a week, depending on the university schedules of the two students you’re covering for, leaving you with plenty of time to relax, explore, or spend time at the nearby orphanage. There, you’re welcome to play with the kids, teach English or yoga, or lead creative activities. A bike is available, and Grab makes getting around simple. If you’re up for it, you can also help sell kombucha at local markets - a fun way to experience real Thai community life. Jicki, your host, often invites volunteers to join her, Poon and Bom on outings to secondhand shops, art galleries, the movies, or to share a local meal together.
Rules
Please be mindful and respectful - your presence is here to help lighten the load, not add to it. Jicki, Poon, and Bom already do a lot, and every extra cost takes away from what can go to the children. Be reliable, keep your space clean, and leave your room as you found it. Dress modestly when visiting the orphanage or local school, and treat the space and the people with kindness and care. This is a place built on love and trust - your attitude makes all the difference. <3
