The experience

Welcome to Mwenelondo Women’s Center, a locally led community project based in Karonga, northern Malawi.

We started with a simple but powerful goal: to give women the tools and support they need to transform their lives.

So far, we’ve successfully trained 10 incredible women in business, tailoring, and entrepreneurship. They are now running small businesses sewing clothes, selling produce, and supporting their families.


What you offer

18 hours of help per week

Building & Repairing: Help with a wide range of repairs or building.

Gardening: Help grow plants and cultivate gardens

Child Care: Caring for, playing with, and spending time with children.

Social Work: Help with volunteer work in local projects and communities.

Additional fee required

Amount: US$ 17 Per day

Fee pays for: Benefits for travelers and Materials for volunteer activities

Description: volunteers or interns are encouraged to contribute 17$ towards the accommodation and three meals per day as well as security.


What you get

2 days off per week

Private Room: You will have a bed in a private room. In other words, a room just for you.

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Team Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other people.

Breakfast: You are entitled to a free breakfast, every day of your stay.

Lunch: You are entitled to a free lunch, every day of your stay.

Dinner: You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.

Free Laundry: You can use our laundry room freely.

Free Tours: We’ll take you on tours and rides around town. For free!

Free Hiking Tours: We’ll take you on excursions and hikes around town. For free!

Get free drinks or beverages.: Drink up! Get free and tasty drinks for yourself.

Free Parties: Get free entrance for the best parties in town.

Free Events: Get free entrance for the best events in town.

Pub Crawls: Be a part of our pub crawls at local bars!

Pick Up: We will pick you up when you arrive, and take you to our property.

Yoga classes: Take free yoga classes at our place.

Surf lessons: Take free surf classes at the local beaches.

Dance classes: Take free dance classes at our place.

Permaculture Course: Take part in our Permaculture course for free.

Use our equipped kitchen: Feel free to use our kitchen and make your own delicious food.

Certificate: Get a certificate of completion after you finish your experience.

Fast Internet Access: High-speed internet for you to work remotely

Dedicated Workspace: Specific space for you to work remotely


Requirements

Intermediate English

Between 18 and 80 years old

Welcomes solo volunteers, couples, and partners of volunteers

Flights, Travel Insurance, Internal Transportation and Visa


Program Details

We’re now working to:
• Train more women in business and vocational skills
• Offer psychosocial support for women living with HIV
• Expand outreach to rural areas around Karonga
• Provide health awareness and life skills education
• Build sustainable businesses that lift entire families

No matter your background, there’s a way you can help. You’ll work directly with local women, our team, and the broader community.


Activities & Shift


Skills & Business Training
• Teach tailoring, knitting, craft-making, or food processing
• Lead workshops on budgeting, record-keeping, or marketing
• Help women improve or launch their small businesses

Psychosocial & HIV Support
• Facilitate safe group discussions on living with HIV
• Provide mental health or peer counseling support (if qualified)
• Assist with awareness workshops on HIV, stigma reduction, and women’s rights

Community Development & Education
• Teach basic literacy or numeracy
• Run classes for children or youth connected to the center
• Help plan outreach events and campaigns

Media & Fundraising
• Take photos or videos to help us tell our story
• Write blog posts, grant applications, or social media content
• Help us connect with international donors and supporters
