Program Details
Our volunteer program at Ermita de los Artistas Libres is designed for those who want to reconnect with creativity, simplicity, and community. The project is still evolving — and we welcome people who are excited to co-create a space of artistic freedom and peaceful living by the ocean.
You’ll be staying in Pozo de la Calcosas, a remote and car-free village on the coast of El Hierro (Canary Islands), where everything is done at human pace. There is no road access to the house — you reach it on foot via a stone path.
We offer accommodation and a chance to live in close contact with the ocean and the elements. In return, we ask for around 4 hours of help per day, 5 days a week, depending on the rhythm of life and your energy.
We believe in shared meals, spontaneous conversations, and giving space for people to breathe. This is not a busy hostel or a fixed routine — it’s more like a slow, collective experiment in living and creating differently.
Activities & Shift
Daily activities can include:
• 🐚 Art & Craft: creating objects from natural materials like shells, driftwood, stones, etc.
• 🧼 Care of the space: sweeping, watering plants, tidying the common area (light maintenance).
• ☕ Hosting: welcoming occasional visitors, offering tea or conversation, explaining the project.
• 📷 Creative documentation: taking photos, sharing ideas on social media, writing stories or updates.
• 🎶 Moments of expression: playing music, organizing a small creative moment (optional, spontaneous).
• 🌿 Occasional help: depending on the season — for example carrying supplies down from the parking area or helping during gatherings.
Shifts are flexible, usually in the mornings (10:00–14:00), leaving you time in the afternoon to rest, swim, explore, or create your own art.
We adapt to your skills and interests. If you’re more comfortable with your hands, we’ll focus on crafts. If you’re into communication, we’ll explore storytelling. If you just want to observe and support quietly, that’s beautiful too.
Rules
We keep it simple, but to make sure everyone has a good experience, here are a few basics:
• Respect the space and the silence: This is a peaceful place. We welcome music and joy, but also value quiet and introspection.
• No alcohol or drugs in the house.
• Be mindful of waste and water use — we live close to nature, with limited resources.
• Leave no trace: clean up after yourself and treat the place as your own.
• Come with an open heart — this is a space of exchange and generosity.
• You must be okay with walking — the house is accessible only by foot (~5–10 min from the parking area).
