From Backpack to Garden Hoe — Growing a Regenerative Life
The experience
Hi! I'm Zaid — welcome to TIWIRGA, my small agroecological farm in Morocco’s Middle Atlas. After years in sustainable development and a life-changing trip through Cuba, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Brazil, I felt the need to reconnect with nature. TIWIRGA was born as a permaculture project to leave the system behind, escape city stress, and live a life aligned with my values and personality. A space for sharing, learning, and living simply...

Program Details
At TIWIRGA, we're building a small agroecological farm in Morocco’s Middle Atlas, near the village of Ain Leuh. Surrounded by cedar forests and fresh mountain air, it’s a place for nature lovers who enjoy simple living and hands-on work. Depending on the season, you'll help with a variety of tasks :
- Planting and taking care of fruit trees and vegetables
- Composting and mulching
- Preparing natural fertilizers and improving soil health
- Watering, harvesting, seed saving
- Creating permaculture beds and experimenting with agroecological techniques
- Light natural building or DIY work (like creating garden structures, fences, small earthworks)
- General help around the land (clearing, maintaining paths, organizing tools)
What you can expect from me:
- I provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere in a peaceful mountain setting, along with healthy local ingredients. The kitchen is a shared responsibility — we cook and clean together
- Cultural exchange and good conversations — I speak English, French, Spanish, Arabic, Amazigh, and German
- Learning opportunities around agroecology, permaculture, and rural Moroccan life
- Cultural visits to nearby villages and souks (markets)
- Opportunities to meet local Amazigh (Berber) nomadic families and learn about their way of life
- Hiking trips in the beautiful cedar forests and mountains surrounding the farm
- Exploring the Ifrane and Khenifra National Parks and hidden gems in the region
- A chance to disconnect, slow down, and reconnect with nature and yourself
Activities & Shift
Volunteering at TIWIRGA means spending time outdoors, connecting with nature, and helping bring a sustainable farm to life. Activities vary depending on the season and the current needs of the land, but here’s a general idea of what your days may look like:
🌿 Daily Activities (depending on weather and priorities):
- Watering plants, trees, and garden beds
- Planting vegetables, herbs, or trees
- Weeding and mulching to protect the soil
- Composting and preparing natural fertilizers
- Harvesting fruits, vegetables, or herbs
- Building and maintaining permaculture beds
- Light eco-construction or DIY tasks (fencing, paths, structures)
- Helping maintain the cleanliness and organization of outdoor spaces
- Occasional help with cooking or preparing tea and meals together
🕒 Shifts & Weekly Rhythm:
🧤 Working hours: 4 to 5 hours per day
⏰ Schedule: Usually in the morning (8:30 am – 1:00 pm), with afternoons free for rest, exploration, or workshops
📆 Days off: 2 days per week — flexible based on activities and weather
We sometimes adjust the rhythm depending on the temperature (earlier shifts in hot months) or special activities like hikes, visits to nomadic families, or exploring the region together.
TIWIRGA is a project in development, so flexibility, initiative, and positive energy are very welcome!
