The experience

The Center cares for confiscated wildlife from the illegal wildlife trade with the aim to releasing them. You make a significant difference in helping wildlife by assisting with the work of the center, husbandry, enrichment, sustainability projects, and more, all while having a unique experience.
We also run an organic farm program that produces healthy food for the animals, and educates local communities about organic farming.


What you offer

32 hours of help per week

Building & Repairing: Help with a wide range of repairs or building.

Gardening: Help grow plants and cultivate gardens

Animal Care: Help look after and take care of animals.

Farming: Plant crops, sow seeds and help in outside tasks.

Additional fee required

Amount: € 155 Per week

Fee pays for: Benefits for travelers, Materials for volunteer activities, and Donation to project

Description: This covers your accommodation costs, food, and an increment to help us cover the expenses of the center, e.g., animal medicine, food, and construction of enclosures. The longer you stay, the fee decreases.

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Program Details

We welcome volunteers from all over the world. The work you will do with the animal keepers and the rest of the staff is vital to the work of Cikananga. Your support will help us look after the many animals under our care as well as the ongoing projects around the center.
If you work on the farm, you help the team to grow food for the animals, and you learn more about tropical organic food production and soil restoration.


Activities & Shift

Together with our Indonesian and international staff, you will work in the center for six days a week from 07.00 to 16.00, inclusive of a lunch break (11.30-13.00). The main tasks that you will do are:
Volunteering at the animal rescue center:
• Daily care of the animals e.g., food preparation and enclosure cleaning
• Preparing and supplying enrichment
• Animal behaviour observations
• Teamwork: This is where all the staff and participants of the program will work on larger group projects within the center.
• Additionally, you may get the chance to assist with or observe the following activities:
- Confiscations and intake health checks
- Moving or rehoming animals within CWRC
- Monitoring medical procedures
- Assisting at the clinic
It is also possible to help with education during school visits, and if the opportunity presents itself, you may be able to help with the confiscation or release of wildlife.

Volunteering at the organic farm:
You will help the small farm team and farm manager with the daily farm tasks, such as making compost, weeding, planting, transplanting, and harvesting.
You learn about all of sustainable farming techniques whilst working alongside our Farm manager who teaches in a practical, hands-on way. As well the valuable knowledge techniques and understanding of methods that you will come away with.


Rules

On arrival , we will ask you to read our hand & rule book and watch an informational video, which includes the rules that are in place during your time at the center. After this, we will ask you to sign our volunteer or intern contract, which confirms you understand the rules.
Please note that we reserve the right to ask you to leave Center if we feel it is appropriate.
• We have a strict no-physical-contact policy with the animals in our care.
• You are not allowed to enter any enclosures without the supervision of our staff.
