Join a Young Family on Their Homestead in Rural Southern Austria
The experience
Hi! We are Anna and Gex, a family of three living in beautiful Southern Austria, near the Slovenian border. π¦πΉ
I work as a social worker, and my wife is a kindergarten teacher. Alongside our jobs, we run a 2.5-hectare homestead, growing much of our own food. We have a fruit orchard, vegetable garden, and chickens, and even our little daughter loves helping with as many tasks as she can! π±π

Program Details
We have volunteered in different parts of the world ourselves and know exactly what volunteers need to have a rewarding and fulfilling stay. π€
Our homestead is located in the hilly "Sausal" area of Southern Styria, at the foothills of the Alps β about 40 km west of us. While the land is not mountainous, itβs full of steep hills, so a basic level of physical fitness is important as you wonβt find many flat spaces here. ποΈ
We offer:
π‘ A private room with a double bed, desk, private bathroom, and a private entrance β located in the basement (cool in summer, well-heated in winter). Note: The space has limited natural light.
π We value healthy living and mainly follow a vegetarian diet, occasionally eating meat sourced from our homestead or direct neighbors.
πΆ Music is an important part of our lives! Anna plays multiple instruments and sings daily with our daughter. We love sharing music moments with our volunteers β whether around a bonfire or during everyday life.
Activities & Shift
Volunteers help with daily tasks around the homestead:
π± All year round:
Taking care of the chickens, orchard, and vegetable garden.
βοΈ Winter:
Pruning trees and bushes, making firewood, general maintenance.
πΈ Spring:
Preparing the garden, producing seedlings, soil work.
βοΈ Summer:
Pasture work, grass cutting, hay making, garden watering.
π Autumn:
Big harvest season: food preservation (juicing, canning, drying).
𧑠Optional:
Spending time playing with our daughter! She loves playing all day and sometimes needs attention more urgently than the farm does. Sharing time with her is always appreciated and rewarded with lots of love. π
Rules
Respect and cleanliness are mandatory at all times. π§Ή
Full house rules will be communicated upon your arrival to ensure a pleasant stay for everyone. π‘β¨
