I spent 3 weeks at the guest house. As their first volunteer, I was welcomed like family from day one. Days had a gentle rhythm - helping with meals, tidying rooms, and laughing with Nela in the kitchen. The family mostly speaks Albanian, but I always felt included. I loved getting a glimpse into their way of life. Each person brought their own warmth, and the twins added plenty of smiles. The location is beautiful. Surrounded by mountains, rivers, and animals, the place felt truly alive. I hiked, swam (a lot!) and soaked in every moment. It was more than just a place. Faleminderit! 🤎

This was a great experience. The work isn't too heavy. An hour or two in the morning cleaning rooms then, a couple hours in the evening helping with dinner. It's a guesthouse run by a very traditional family. You'll work most closely with Nela. She is really nice and cooks really good, comforting food. The views are stunning. And I recommend walking a bit away from the property at night to look at the stars. Also be aware you may switch rooms a few times depending on how full the guesthouse is. But if you travel light it's not much of a problem. Thank you guys for everything!!

The proximity to hiking trails and nature is amazing, there are heaps of options available and the mountains are beautiful. Communication isn't always easy as much of the family doesn't speak English, but Google translate goes a long way, and they are all very nice. They are very generous and lent us (me and the other volunteer) camping gear, were willing to drop you off to the bus, and were very generous with the food. The meals were good, and you got to try some traditional Albanian dishes. The workload was very easy, and if there was too much, they helped out so you didn't go over the time

Overall I had a great stay in Valbone! I was lucky there were two of us volunteering when there would usually be one so we even borrowed some gear and went camping on our days off. It can be hard to connect sometimes but they would include us in card games after dinner. Something that could really have been improved upon was my arrival. I was originally told I could get picked up in Fierze but found out kind of last minute that I had to get the bus. When I got there everything was explained to me by the other volunteer as no one who spoke english was there. More “thank you's” would be nice :)
