Program Details
We are looking for a basic Farm Hand who can help with daily life and chores on a farm and in the gardens.
The volunteer doesn't need all the skills but must be willing to learn and work along with and beside us. We want to grow the sustainable farming community and this is a wonderful way for us to share our knowledge and experience. We are continually learning as well, so we're open to also be taught new things.
Activities & Shift
Daily tasks include: feeding the animals, getting water, changing bedding, cleaning stalls or coops.
garden chores include: weeding, seeding, cultivating, harvesting, processing, drying produce and everything related to preserving.
Other tasks will include assisting with fence repair, wood harvesting, garden clean up... depending on the season.
In the heat of the summer we will try to get our work done early, as the heat can be overbearing in the fields. That way you are more than welcome to take the rest of the day off and enjoy the lake or nearby trails.
Some days we will be done at noon and other days, you will be done at 5:00 just in time for dinner, or this could be later depending on the day and weather.
I will keep the fridge full of food for you, but you will be making meals yourself in the guest house. We do groceries once a week, so please plan your meals for the week and write a list. We have a store nearby to purchase what you need.
We will sometimes ask you to join us for dinner in the main house or dinner out but that is completely up to you.
We raise Icelandic sheep here, we trim their hooves, shear their fleece, and early in the season (April), we are full steam ahead with our lambing season. you will leave this farm with a great understanding on how to manage a sheep flock.
We will only have you working Mon-Friday and you will have two days off (the weekend) to yourself. If we get into a jam on the weekend we might ask you to help out but that will be rare. You are also more than welcome to spend as much time with the animals as you would like.
Rules
We ask that you respect us, our family, animals, houses and farm. We are kind, generous people and want that in return.
You are responsible for the general upkeep of the guest house (dishes, vacuuming, your laundry, room and garbage). We also ask, that if you smoke, please do it outside of the guest house and dispose of your cigarettes properly :)
If you do drink, please do so responsibly. :)
