Staying at Ilonas farm I learned much about plants, using resources, renovating and the latvian culture. She taught me how to recognize weeds, how to care for plants, which plants are edible and how to cook delicious desserts. I really enjoyed swimming in the pond, working different tasks and living slow. Even though I thought I would be the only one for 2 weeks, there were many other volunteers, coming and going, so it never got boring. Ilona is a very good story teller, warm-hearted, caring and enthusiastic. In my free time I visited the city's around or spend time in the beautiful nature.

Ilonas is a delightful host, I learned so much about permaculture and the natural world, her ambition for art is also wonderful, we had great conversations about so many topics, like poetry, mythology and books. she is brimming with stories about her childhood, she is the kind of person I thought existed only in books, a true polymath, like Goethe. A true cultural exchange infused with sauna and baking lessons. will hopefully come back in the future. The place itself is quite rustic, if you stay long enough you will realise the discrepancy between what you want and what you need

We came to Ilona's farm wanting to learn something about building, and she went out of her way to teach us the most she could in a week :) Ilona really respects her volunteers and adjusts the tasks according to their wishes and abilities, so we truly learned a lot (about building and much more). Ilona is an extremely interesting and lively person who has a lot to share. She spent a lot of time with us telling us stories, teaching us about the culture, Latvian and not only. One day we even had a special sauna ceremony – what a way to spend your birthday 😃 This was truly a special experience.

I have to say that the place is incredibly beautiful. If you're looking for a place to disconnect from everything and get in touch with nature, than this is your spot. I worked mostly in the garden and helped Ilona to sort things around the house. Ilona has a lot of knowledge about latvian culture and history, which is very interesting and she also embraces the local culture a lot. I think it's worth mentioning that Ilona currently lives alone on the property, which was a reason why I left earlier, because it was too lonely for me, but I'm sure that it can be good for the right people. 🙏

My stay at Permaculture Lab was a unique and interesting experience. Ilona was very good at sharing her home and personal space with me. I tried many new foods and saw lots of cool critters in the garden. I had thought there was going to be other volunteers while I was there but it was only us two. It was a quiet 3 weeks with lots of time for thinking and reflection. During this experience I leaned about sustainability by simplifying my needs.

This was my first experience, and Ilona made it truly wonderful! I couldn't be more satisfied and happy with it. She is an amazing woman, teacher, storyteller, and artist. During my 10-day stay at her lovely farm, I learned so much and gained numerous new skills. I worked with plants, wood, construction tools, and various materials and techniques. Ilona also gave me a tour of the farm and some nearby places. Her passion for nature and her extensive knowledge about everything you need to know are truly inspiring. My stay couldn't have been better for a first experience. Thank you so much Ilona

If you're looking for a break from everything, I don't know if there's a better place than this, as it's in the middle of a forest where you can easily see deer, beavers, foxes and lots of birds, but even if you don't see anything, just being there will enchant you. Mrs. Ilona shows you how she grows her crops and how she tries to live in harmony with our world and always tries to do her best for her helpers.

It is a strong but enriching experience, it takes you back a few good years, you get in touch with nature 100% and you learn too much with the Host.
