Program Details
This project began in 2019 as an open space for people to grow, learn, and share different practices and techniques for self-healing.
Today, the intention is to develop and explore tools and methods that promote natural medicine and medicinal plants as alternatives for well-being.
The ideal collaborators for the farm include people developing theses or research projects, as well as anyone interested in organic agriculture, medicinal plants, sustainability, construction, or community building. The farm welcomes pairs or groups of two or more people, including couples, and private room options can be arranged.
The farm provides a variety of tools, machines, and materials such as concrete blocks, metal, bamboo, and clay. Anyone—whether creative, hands-on, or simply eager to learn—is welcome to take on a project that adds value to the farm. It’s always rewarding to see participants start and complete something tangible before they leave. Scheduling is flexible, and depending on the skills of the collaborators, priorities can shift; this has happened before when architects, biologists, and others have joined.
Community members are an essential part of the project. Local or Indigenous collaborators may visit to support the farm, creating opportunities to learn from their knowledge—and maybe even pick up a few Cabécar words.
The farm can be seen as a space for people to develop practical abilities for rural living, become more self-sufficient, reconnect with their roots, and of course, learn from nature.
Currently, Michael lives on the farm with three dogs, one cat, fish, chickens, and a horse named Houdini. His house is separate from the main kitchen and the guest accommodations, allowing everyone privacy after work hours.
Collaborators should have their own insurance.
Activities & Shift
A typical schedule may look like this:
6:30 am — Gathering & Reading
7:00 am — Start of Tasks & Organization
9:00 am — Breakfast
(Breaks and snacks in between as needed)
2:00 pm — Lunch
There is flexibility in the schedule, especially if you believe you can bring specific value to the farm or if you have personal objectives you want to pursue while remaining productive. Adjustments can be made depending on your skills and the needs of the project.
One of the advantages of the project is the privacy and tranquility it offers—located at the peak of the mountains, surrounded by birds, animals, and nature. The closest town is about 25 minutes away by car, making it an ideal place to go inward, reflect, and enjoy peace and quiet.
In the past, people have coincidentally met on the farm and created beautiful, meaningful moments together. If you are looking for a very outgoing or party-oriented environment, this might not be the ideal option. However, there are occasional gatherings with locals that include good music, good food, and shared activities.
Rules
Meals
Weekdays: The farm provides complete breakfast and lunch together, costarrican style food. For dinner, you can either use your own ingredients or coordinate with the group if you want to cook together. When available, the farm provides yuca, tiquisque, arracache, plantains, bananas, rice, beans, and spices that can be used for dinner.
Weekends: The farm can offer the same basic ingredients listed above; collaborators are encouraged to contribute their own products to supplement meals. As an alternative, you can visit the nearby town and support local family businesses—especially Doña Rosa’s Kitchen, known for producing cheese and milk. Her food is delicious and cooked in a traditional outdoor oven, and she can also prepare desserts upon request.
