Protect the Peruvian Amazon and Train as a Biologist


The experience

We are dedicated to discovering, understanding and protecting the ecosystems that stretch from Andes cloud forest to the lowland Amazon jungle.

The volunteer program has been designed as a dynamic, mutually beneficial experience, providing a variety of unique experiential learning opportunities for participants, as they contribute to the station’s biodiversity monitoring, reforestation and regenerative agriculture programs.


What you offer

25 hours of help per week

Social Work: Help with volunteer work in local projects and communities.

Animal Care: Help look after and take care of animals.

Farming: Plant crops, sow seeds and help in outside tasks.

Gardening: Help grow plants and cultivate gardens

Additional fee required

Amount: US$ 450 Per week

Fee pays for: Benefits for travelers, Materials for volunteer activities, and Donation to project

Description: This fee covers all activities, food, transport from Cusco and accommodation as well as supporting the conservation work of the project. Living and working in this remote location means it is very pricey to get supplies in to the site.


What you get

2 days off per week

Team Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other people.

Breakfast: You are entitled to a free breakfast, every day of your stay.

Lunch: You are entitled to a free lunch, every day of your stay.

Dinner: You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.

Free Hiking Tours: We’ll take you on excursions and hikes around town. For free!

Intermediate Spanish or Intermediate English

Program Details

Volunteers will support in three key focus areas -
1) Climate Change & Biodiversity Monitoring - Collecting data along transects, checking humane research traps, animal counts, curation of entomological collections.
2) Reforestation - the vast majority of the 3000+ hectare property is well preserved but some areas need some help. Help maintain tree nursery, removal of bamboo patchers, plant trees, care of reforested areas.
3) Regenerative Agriculture - get involved with our permaculture designs, aquaculture systems and or bee farming. Help us harvest, manage compost and grow more food!

During your stay you will be surrounded by professional scientists conducting their studies on our project site. You can learn from them and have the opportunity to get involved with their studies.


Activities & Shift

Other activities include -
- Assisting with the maintenance of hiking trails around the station.
- Wildlife photography and other content production.
- Replenishment of hummingbird feeders and fruit supplies for birds.

In free time and days off you can enjoy hiking, swimming, kayaking, volleyball, night walks, movie nights, bonfires, hikes to waterfalls, community visits and camping experiences.


Rules

- Volunteers are expected to work approx 8 hours per day, 5 days a week. But there will be plenty of time for fun!
- We encourage you to explore the trails but let us know where you are going and an expected time back.
- We encourage volunteers to have travel insurance.
- Volunteers will not handle any wildlife without express permission from Manu staff
- Quite hours 10pm - 06am.
