I can't recommend this place enough, especially if you are a foodie. Lily and her mum are so lovely and make you feel right at home. The actual work is very dependent on how busy the restaurant is / whether they have the host classes on, but it's very easy. I mainly helped with food preparation, serving tables and washing up/ cleaning. My favourite part was joining Lili and her mum for early morning visits to produce markets and getting taken to local spots for breakfast, and trips in the evening to check out night markets or grab dessert. I truly loved my time here and could've stayed longer!

Joining in the almost everyday morning market routine is the highlight of this experience. This is the moment of the day where you get to see local life, and share with Lily and ask as many questions as you want. During the day, she will be focus on the business and you on your assignments. The more protective and curious, the more you will learn. Although don't expect this to be a the host sory of things, but more of a cultural learning experience. Lily and Pope cooks amazing, so food was always good, and they always made sure there was enough fruit around. Thanks Lily and Pope

It's a great opportunity to contribute to a working kitchen and to share recipes from your own culture. The more effort you put in and the longer you stay, the more you will learn of the tasty and meticulous Peranakan cuisine. I highly recommend joining Lili and her mom on their early morning outings to the various markets in and around KL! I really valued these times of conversation about the local culture and many other topics, along with the opportunity to try out different restaurants. I was also touched to be welcomed into the family home, and included in rest day outings.

Sarang is definitely a home away from home. Lili and Popo are so nice to me. I felt like I was part of the family and their local life in Malaysia. We went to the local market and food night market. The workload is reasonable; the schedule can be discussed and flexible. Please bring your own blanket.

I want to express my deepest gratitude to Lili, our incredible chef and volunteer coordinator. The experience under her guidance has been transformative. Lili taught us local recipes, shared her culture, and showed us the best places to eat in Kuala Lumpur. Her passion for the host and the importance of the host with love is contagious. the host with her, it felt like being in a warm and welcoming home. I highly recommend this volunteer program. Thank you, Lili, for all the love and wisdom you've shared.

I had such an amazing time at Sarang Cookery so I can only recommend the place for travellers. Lili and Phopo were lovely hosts and people and formed a small family with the other volunteers too. If you are interested in gastronomy or local culture you can also learn a lot during the host classes and daily bases. The working hours were clear and I had also time to rest and explore Kuala Lumpur. I am sure I will come back if I visit Kuala Lumpur again :))

I can not wish for a more wonderful experience than the time I spent in Sarang. Lili took me to the local farmer's market and night market and showed me the most the host and authentic Malay food. She is eager to exchange knowledge and learn from every volunteer. And I was so inspired by her huge passion and dedication to food and this business.
