Program Details
Volunteers will have a room (maximum of two sharing) in the beautiful old house that is slowly becoming the Circus Palace. It is in the village of Alpedriz, which is 20 drive minutes from the famous surfing town of Nazaré.
You will be doing a mixture of learning new performance skills, costume making, rehearsals, creating a Fundraising Show, and also gardening and property maintenance for 5 hours a day, five days a week. Food will be provided for three meals a day, though we will take turns at cooking, or sometimes you will just make your own dinner. Cooking is on a camping strove, and the shower can go cold quite quickly. We are slowly improving these things!
We will be alternating between hours working on the show and production, and hours working on the house and garden.
I'm happy to drop you in Nazaré for the day on Saturdays, though sometimes we all go out to events and festivals or have a party at the house. On Sunday's I teach aerial classes and you are welcome to join one free of charge✨
Activities & Shift
The project will develop organically so you will need to be flexible with expectations for each day.
Please be ready to go each morning by 9am.
Activities will involve:
Weeding and planting
Water blasting, sanding and polishing
Painting
Cleaning
Learning new performance skills
Rehearsals and Fire Training Practise
Costume and prop-making
Performance Days
Please read the house rules. It will be important to manage your energy levels by getting up on time and going to bed before midnight to stay focused on putting together a professional production.
Rules
No alarms, walking around the house, cleaning or banging things before 8am.
Quiet in the house after 11pm (unless we are having group drinks).
Basic living skills are not included in the five working hours. Please share the cooking duties (we may have a roster if there are several volunteers) and clean up after yourself.
No smoking inside the house. You can smoke outside the back door in the rear courtyard. Please don't leave cigarette butts in the garden, put them in the bin.
Please be kind to the furniture. It's old but it's special.
This is a work site, so don't invite visitors without prior arrangement with Flame.
The grounds used to be part of a nature reserve and for that reason we have no pets.
You are welcome to have a few drinks with the locals... but if you consistently do not appear at work on time, you will be asked to leave.
