Program Details
United Tansania e.V. established in 2020 is an international NGO, based in Berlin, Germany. The project is located at Lake Eyasi, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, in Northern Tanzania. Our objectives include; studying hyena population density and geographical distribution, clan sizes geographical distribution, photo ID of individuals, home range of individuals, and evaluation of sightings as well as investigating and mitigating hyena/human conflict and responding to emergencies. We also implement a rabies eradication program for Lake Eyasi`s dog population. Rabies is a major risk for hyenas through exposure to infected domestic dogs. Please note there is a donation fee to participate in the program. Your donation helps defer the cost of your stay and supports salaries for six local staff members who assist with the project. These salaries allow our staff members to support their families.
Activities & Shift
Typical day?
Early morning:
-Trekking and camera trapping
-Walking transects and marking tracks using GPS
-Collecting faecal samples
After lunch:
-Analyze images and identify individuals using our ID catalog
-Visit a school and teach the children (one day per week)
-Visit cattle hearders to investigate and mitigate any human-hyena conflicts
-Work on social media posts for Facebook, Instagram, etc.
There is really no typical day!T In the African bush, every day is dynamic and different. Many things cannot be planned and depend on circumstances that change depending on the season, weather and local events event. One day we might be rescuing a hyena with a snare, the next day we might be working with a family who was affected by a hyena and yet another day we might be teaching the local school children about the important role that hyenas play in the environment.
