Daniel and his family approach their project with all their heart, often they just don't have enough time for a lot. And they really need help. I recommend. Just keep in mind that there will be little food, and if you are used to coffee or large portions, then count on yourself, buy more food. The family is very friendly and open to communication. You will be into the real world of Guatemala. I recommend.

It was an immense pleasure to work with Daniel's daughters Lisbeth and Leila. They made me feel welcome and showed me around the school. The students are 15-21 year old Mayan girls from local communities that are eager to learn and very inquisitive. It was a joy to contribute to their language education and a very rewarding time spent at San Juan! A couple of things that you should be prepared for when volunteering here. The nights get very cold so be sure to bring thermals to make sure you don't wake from the cold at night. The room they provide get frosty (even for a Dutch girl like me).

Yes friend, thank you for your support in school painting, in English classes, in psychological support for the girls.
God bless you, you sing impressively. We are looking for money to build the volunteer house.

Daniel and his family are as sweet as they are engaged and ambitious. I had to help repainting the classrooms and I had access to all the material needed. You will also be welcomed to eat with the family all three meals (I found quantity ok but if too little for you, you can buy more food in the center which is close by) Daniel needs volunteers who are independent and willing to help, not just sleep and eat for free. There is work to do and it is a beautiful project :) Comfort is basic but again if you are here to help you will have a fulfilling experience with this nice family!

Volunteering here was a great experience! Definitely a wonderful way to be immersed in local culture and languages! The students at the school are all so eager to learn which makes teaching very rewarding. The store was also great because you get to really see how the textiles are made and can be up close with the weaving process. I would definitely recommend to anyone that is looking for a deep cultural immersion with community impact!

Overall, it was a good and immersive experience; you can tell that the family that runs the association cares about girls' education and sustainable tourism promotion. The facilities are simple but provide the minimum for an excellent short stay. I was glad to help them kickstart their Instagram account, and I hope future volunteers can continue the social media work since it is critical to the success of the NGO.

I stayed one week with Daniel. The work was to paint the walls of the classrooms and to wash the dishes, it wasn't really difficult and it was only in the morning. Something you need to know before volunteering here is the cold at night with just a little blanket (but Daniel told me it is in his project to build a house for the volunteers). I would suggest asking questions about what will be your experience to Daniel before coming and to give ideas about what you want to do.

The family is very nice and they're trying to do good for their community. The work isn't particularly taxing and they don't ask for a lot. With that said, my expectations were not met and I didn't have a good experience. The entire place is in a permanent state of neglect. Not just by "western standards". It's very dirty and unsanitary by any definition. I mostly was washing the families dishes that were heaped up in days old stacks, often still with old food and scraps of raw meat on them attracting bugs. Communication wasn't great either, the job description wasn't met.

First friend, I'm sorry for not filling you with good expectations about our project, we said it before that we are not a hotel, nor are we a restaurant. I didn't want to give you a reference so as not to give you problems in your profile, since you did it here, because the truth is with you, the work you did was not very satisfactory,
1.- The dishes were a main task that we had to do, to do it it took you a long time to do it, you were very slow at that job.
2.- painting the classroom, you did 2 square meters of ceiling paint for a long time every 8 hours, after you another person came in 4 hours and painted 16 meters of white paint.
3.- You did not come consenting to your work, the paint that was spread on the floor is still there, it stayed on the floor both in the classroom and in the bathroom.
4.- When the ring fell off in the bathroom we had to fix it again, we glued it again, if with prior notice you dismantled the sink and didn't leave it as it was, you didn't care that the water came out.
5.- The biggest problem is when you used the bathroom, the students got upset because it took you too long to be in the bathroom, when there were students.
I told you that if you didn't like the food you could make your own using the utensils or what we had to eat, you could do it yourself, and you never cooked.
The rest of the food you say is true because it had to be washed, I don't know if you noticed, it was the students' snacks, which are often washed the next day.

I apologize my great friend, I hope that in the other projects you are faster, that your work is not slow, we do not like to have bosses who command or direct, we always want the volunteers to be proactive and for them to do things according to their interest. In support, thank you for coming and sorry for telling you all this because this was what we saw during the time of your work.

First of all I want to thank the whole family, it was a real pleasure to stay with you for 2 weeks<3<3<3 My work was basically to clean the dishes in the morning, open the shop, and help translate if necessary... As I understood, what is needed here is a lot of proactivity, give new ideas, perspective and help with whatever is necessary. I tried to help in the organization of the volunteering, with social media and with the english course for adults. If you want to learn about real local life here choose them!!

I had a really great experience volunteering here. It's the perfect opportunity to get a unique inside look into guatemalan culture. It's also a great place to practice your Spanish. The family is very nice and always welcoming and the food is amazing. San Juan la Laguna is also one of the nicest towns around the lake in my opinion and a great place to stay for a couple of weeks.
