Rules
An honest gesture intended to help can sometimes have unintended consequences if not carefully considered. Therefore, we kindly ask our volunteers to adhere to a few important guidelines.
Please do NOT give money to villagers or pay for tasks they did not perform, or for minor actions that would have been done regardless (e.g., things they would have done anyway).
As a foreign visitor, particularly in African countries, you may encounter a form of discrimination because you come from a developed nation and may have more financial resources. Villagers might try to take advantage of this and could ask you for money for trivial things. We advise against giving them money, as this will only reinforce the idea that "mzungu" (the Swahili term for a white person or foreigner) equals someone who can be asked for more and more money.
