Program Details
Our volunteer program is a flexible one simply because volunteers use this time to volunteer at the same relax from active life from their home country and also and site seeing. Usually when volunteer arrive we give them few days of rest to climates themselves with the new environment (we treat them like queens/kings). This is then followed by orientation of the project, the activities for the whole week, the cultures and so on and could give them an opportunity also to reflect on what ideas they have and would want to introduce. We then introduce her/him to the school he/her will be teaching. Then we develop a program for the volunteer period based on the areas to focus on.
Activities & Shift
As part of the host family member, the volunteer is expected to participate together with the family members daily activities like cleaning, cooking, gardening, going to the market and so on. Apart from the daily normal activities, as a volunteer teacher, she/he is expected to wake up in the morning take breakfast and go to school nearby for the lessons upto noon. The volunteer can then take afternoon rest, unless there is something else to be done. The shift can be either teaching in the morning or in the afternoon. Other activities involved visits to widows home to experience their life situation and other times attend community cultural activities to learn more about our culture. Over the weekends the volunteer is free to tour around Kisumu city or any part of Kenya. We will also have language lessons from time to time and any other relevant activities.
Rules
Our main obligation is to ensure safety of the volunteers therefore, our expectations are:
1. Always consult with the host before doing anything you are not sure of or going out on your own, its advisable to be accompanied
2. Our cultures may be different in many ways that should bring out synergy of learning from one another for a happy stay.
