Probably the nicest hostel I've ever stayed at. Lots of free bonuses, like a grocery budget, free coffee, and other free food. The shifts are easy and I recommend it. Maybe the staff room isn't as nice as the customer rooms, but I don't mind.

Thanks so much for staying Carter! It was great to have you on board. I have so great news: we moved the Helpers room to 't Wed room! So specious, light, new bathrooms/toilet! So next time you come you will have a fancy volunteers room! :)

Let me start by saying that everyone there was really cool, but there was a lot of issues going on within the hostel itself. Our dorm was super crowded, and the sink was clogged in our room the entire time I was there(even though we told staff about it immediately). Some of the hours/tasks we were asked to do as volunteers were out of our comfort zones, but there was never really a conversation about what we could say no to. I don't have enough space to put everything, but I hope in the future for the sake of volunteers that there will be better communication and more respect for volunteers.

Dear Abigail, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize for the issues and challenges you encountered during your volunteer experience at Hello I'm Local. It was indeed an unusual period for all of us, with a lot of internal changes and challenges. Our goal is of course another, to offer a pleasant & fun experience, with new learnings. Unfortunately, we could not match your expectations. All the best to you Abby!

I've had a pretty good time at the hostel. The staff are amazing and affectionate, always respecting our time with the language. Tim is a real host and knows how to make any situation light and funny. However, the activities at the hostel are quite tiring and demand a lot of our strength and disposition. I honestly don't think that as volunteers we should have the amount of responsibility for the hostel that we do, but we did your best as a team. By the way, if you're up for it, I think it will be an unforgettable experience!

The hostel grateful for fellow volunteers and staff who cared for us. However, the owner's cleaning expectations are unrealistic due to turnover. Most staff (in general/all depts) left before and during our stay, leaving housekeeping to volunteers. The owner told us there were no plans to hire replacements. I suggest hiring staff to maintain standards, as volunteers arriving and leaving will never be able to upkeep. The hostel isn't 5* - with aspirations to be, needs trained staff. Ex. the owner inspects for dust by dragging her finger along door frames. In the end - made lifelong friendships.

Overall, a largely positive experience. I made lifelong friends with the other volunteers and Haarlem is a beautiful city. Shoutout to the (remaining) amazing staff Kaj, Robyn, Twan, Miranda and Shimi! I didn't get to meet Tim as he was on holiday, but he still provided good communication. Unfortunately my group arrived when most of the staff had quit their jobs. There were concerns that unexpected responsibilities would be placed onto us and sadly that is what happened, with the volunteers being entirely responsible for housekeeping. (DM me for more detailed explanation.)

The experience at the hostel was great, had the best time with the people working and volunteering there. The hours of work are not bad and you can arrange them in advance.

My experience started really well with the staff being flexible and welcoming. I had a true feeling of being heard. In the first chat with Tim he was very kind and open with my shorter than usual availability! I stayed there for 3 weeks and I feel like I really connected with the usual staff, something I was aiming for. Haarlem is a lovely city. The hostel location and facilities are amazing, so the vibes are also great! I'd point out that I found difficult to manage that amount of working hours in contrast with the free time, which really limited my exploring time and energy. the hostel grateful :)

My time at the hostel was so special. After six weeks of solo travel, I was ready to slow down and create some longer lasting friendships, and that's what I found here! The other volunteers and staff are amazing! I loved hanging out at the beautiful property or taking a bike to explore charming Haarlem. Schedules are clearly communicated a week ahead and Tim is flexible with your requests. Someone is always there to help when you're working. I will cherish this memory! Much love to the hostel team ❤️
