Program Details
As a volunteer with the Mawimbi School Club, you will play an active role in empowering girls aged 12–18 while learning about Maasai culture. Depending on the timing of your stay, you may be included in the following activities (Not all):
1. Needs Assessment – Help identify challenges girls face regarding menstruation, such as access to hygiene materials and knowledge gaps, to inform the training program.
2. Training Teachers – Support in educating school teachers on menstrual health so they can provide accurate guidance and create a supportive environment for students.
3. Training Girls – Assist in teaching menstrual health, hygiene, and reproductive rights to 100 girls over six months using interactive and engaging methods.
4. Teaching Pad Making – Learn to make reusable sanitary pads from local fabrics, waterproof materials, and towels, and guide girls in creating their own pads.
5. Pad Distribution – Help distribute the pads made by girls to ensure they have reliable menstrual products.
6. Monitoring and Evaluation – Participate in assessing the impact of the program, gathering feedback, and helping improve future sessions.
7. Cultural Exchange & Documentation – Experience Maasai traditions, try local foods, wear cultural attire, take photos and videos, and share content with supporters and the community.
Activities & Shift
1. In-Office Activities
Some days will be spent in our office preparing workshops, creating teaching materials, writing reports, editing photos and videos, and sharing content on social media. These activities ensure the program runs smoothly and that the impact is documented and communicated.
2. Out-of-Office Activities
Other days of the program takes place in Maasai villages. Volunteers will train girls on menstrual health, teach them to make reusable pads, and support community initiatives. You will also have the opportunity to explore Maasai culture, including traditional foods, attire, and local customs, making this a unique cultural immersion.
Rules
During out-of-office activities in Maasai villages, volunteers are expected to respect local customs and traditions. We recommend wearing cultural attire or modest, decent clothing at all times. This ensures cultural sensitivity and shows respect to the community while participating in training and other activities.
