Hey, have to thank Toshi for the great time in this town. It's not for most, but you'll definitely appreciate it if you're coming from a big city. If you like to surf, you probably won't want to leave. Even if you don't, Toshi will take the time to teach you, like he did with me. You'll get plenty of practice in & the beach has different waves for all levels. Also, I ended up meeting more locals than in the first month, so don't be shy, they're fun to hang with. If you miss the city life, Miyazaki is a short train ride away, perfect for a night out. GL!

Amazing experience in this hostel! Toshi the host took me with the other staff to dinner, we went surfing together and he showed us around at the Miyazaki shrine, it was amazing! The work is easy, just 1-2 hours a day and you get loads of free time to explore Miyazaki prefecture. The only downside is Aoshima being a small town with not much to do besides the shrine, surfing, the botanic gardens and the onsens. But overall it was great, if I ever come back to Japan I'm defenitely going back to Toshi's hostel!

Great experience, aoshima is a quite little town with a lot of character. It's about a 30 minute train ride to Miyazaki and the guesthouse is close to the train station. Workload varies depending on how busy it is. But usually no more than 2 hours in the morning. Be ready to meet people because you will be spending alot of time in close quarters with your coworkers. All in all its a good place to relax and explore. Toshi the host is also very friendly. Important things like menus and train schedules are in Japanese so knowing some Japanese will definitely help you here.

I spent the entire month of March in Aoshima and I can say I really enjoy it. The work was really easy we always start at 10:00 and depending on how much people were checking out we usually were free by 11:30am or 12:00pm. The town is not big so it is really peacefull and beautiful the landscape was really awesome, the ocean meeting the mountains and also the bento next to the seven eleven to the south of the city is really good and cheap Toshi's favorite and now mine Spending time with Toshi and learning about Japan in the reception is also a really chill and nice thing to do.

Miyazaki is so special for me... The best memories from Japan comes from this place because of the people I met and the friends I made. The work varies a lot between the dates you choose to travel but you'll find enough time for everything. Toshi is an awfully good host, his dedication to work is plausible and he is indeed very attentive. I recommend you to come here only if you are responsible, organized and you really want to learn the japanese culture, since it is not enjoyable for everyone. Once you cling to this place, perhaps... you will come back!

The month I spent in Aoshima was great! The other travellers were amazing and we had so much fun together :) Toshi were very kind to us and always willing to help everyone. If you love being surrounded by nature, this is the right place for you!

Toshi is a great host. He is respectable, open-minded and has a good sense of humour. He sets a high standard and expects everyone to pull together so that the 'workaways' and guests feel at their most comfortable throughout their stay. My only slight let down would be that we wouldn't do much together as a group in the way of learning how to surf, or learn Japenese (as was advertised with the experience post). These activities are predominantly self-guided and maybe someone with backpacking experience can give me some perspective on this- are my expectations are too high here or not?

This place is terrific. The highlight of the experience without a doubt is the people of Miyazaki, touring Aoshima and it's surroundings, surfing and, finally, food; in that order. The work is standard sheet changing and housecleaning. The load varies greatly between summer season and winter season. Finally, the host is amazing. Toshi is the kind of guy you can sit with and have a chill conversation any time after work. He's also super serviceable and super honest. I recommend working here to a very specific kind of people: responsible workers with a laid back attitude and a passion for nature
