The experience

Rays of Hope Community supports the dignity, inclusion, and well-being of elderly community members. As an Elderly Care Volunteer, you will offer companionship and social support through conversation, shared activities, and light daily assistance. This role focuses on non-medical care, helping reduce social isolation and strengthening community connection.


What you offer

24 hours of help per week

Painting & Decorating: Help with painting or decorating the property facilities.

Cleaning: Help clean the kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms and common areas.

Elderly Care: Assisting and spending time with the elderly.

Child Care: Caring for, playing with, and spending time with children.


What you get

2 days off per week

Shared Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other travelers.

Team Dorm: You will have a bed in a shared room, which means you will share the same room with other people.

Breakfast: You are entitled to a free breakfast, every day of your stay.

Lunch: You are entitled to a free lunch, every day of your stay.

Dinner: You are entitled to a free dinner, every day of your stay.

Discounts on Accommodation: Get discounts for your stay in other hostels.

Pick Up: We will pick you up when you arrive, and take you to our property.

Dance classes: Take free dance classes at our place.

Language lessons: Take free language classes at our place.

Holistic Therapies: You can take part in any of our therapeutic activities for free.

Certificate: Get a certificate of completion after you finish your experience.

Dedicated Workspace: Specific space for you to work remotely


Requirements

Beginner English or Beginner Swahili

Between 18 and 80 years old

Welcomes solo volunteers, couples, and partners of volunteers

Program Details

As an Elderly Care Volunteer at Rays of Hope Community, you will actively engage with elderly members of the community, offering companionship, social interaction, and light practical support. You can expect to participate in conversations, assist with organizing spaces or small errands, and support activities that promote social well-being.

In return, you will receive guidance and mentorship from our local staff, a safe and welcoming environment, opportunities to learn about Kenyan culture and community life, and a meaningful experience contributing to the dignity and inclusion of older adults. This is a hands-on, community-focused role, focused on non-medical care and respectful interaction.

Rules for Volunteers:

Treat all elderly community members with respect, patience, and kindness.

This role is non-medical; volunteers are not expected to provide healthcare.

Maintain a positive, friendly, and professional attitude at all times.

Follow guidance from staff when assisting with activities or light tasks.

Be punctual, reliable, and communicate promptly if you cannot attend.

Respect local cultural norms, customs, and privacy of all participants.

Maintain a clean and safe environment during activities.

Use phones and devices responsibly; focus on interaction with the elderly.
