Program Details

This program offers a hands-on immersion in a professional organic market garden located on the French Riviera, in Menton, close to the Italian border. We are looking for responsible, active Worldpackers who are genuinely interested in learning (or deepening their knowledge of) organic horticulture in a production-focused environment.

Volunteers are expected to participate reliably in daily tasks, follow instructions and work as part of a small team. The work is physical, outdoors, and takes place on steep terraced land, so good fitness and motivation are essential. Previous experience in gardening, horticulture or permaculture is appreciated, though not required for all tasks.

In return, we offer comfortable accommodation in a quiet setting, shared meals prepared with organic produce from the garden, internet access, laundry facilities and a respectful, welcoming atmosphere. Volunteers gain direct experience in all stages of production—from sowing and harvesting to preparing produce for markets and restaurants—while enjoying free afternoons, easy access to the beach and town, and life on the sunny Mediterranean coast.

Activities & Shift

Activities vary depending on the season and crops, but may include:

Sowing seeds and planting vegetables, herbs and fruit trees

Watering plants and managing irrigation systems

Harvesting fruit and vegetables for markets and restaurant orders

Clearing and preparing raised beds

Weeding, mulching and basic landscaping

Creating compost and organic mulch

Basic DIY, maintenance and fencing

Cutting and stacking firewood

Preparing, sorting and packing produce for market

Loading and unloading for local markets

Helping with meal preparation and cleaning shared spaces

Work is mainly scheduled in the mornings (early start during hot months), with afternoons and evenings usually free.

Rules

This is physical, outdoor work on steep terraced land; volunteers must be fit and comfortable working in these conditions.

Appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes and sun protection are required.

Participation in meal preparation, cooking and cleaning is expected as part of daily life.

No smoking or drugs inside the house; smoking is allowed only in designated outdoor areas due to fire risk.

Alcohol is permitted in moderation and with respect for others.

Volunteers must follow safety instructions, especially when using tools or working with irrigation and garden equipment.

The property is not suitable for children or people with limited mobility.

Respect for the house, garden, neighbours and community is essential.

A positive attitude, reliability and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are expected.
