🐄 Cow Dung as a Traditional Antiseptic and Antimicrobial Material
Cow dung has been traditionally applied to walls and floors in rural homes across India and many other parts of the world. In recent years, scientific studies have begun examining the basis of these practices, highlighting their potential antimicrobial, hygienic, and environmental benefits when used appropriately.
🔬 Scientific Basis (Overview)
Research suggests that:
Cow dung contains natural antimicrobial compounds and beneficial microflora.
Laboratory studies have shown inhibitory effects against certain human pathogens under controlled conditions.
When used as part of a mud–lime plaster system, it can improve surface hygiene, dust control, and thermal comfort.
Natural plasters contribute to low-toxicity indoor environments and reduced embodied energy.
(All work follows safe, traditional preparation and drying practices.)
