Back in 2016, I joined a Train-the-Trainer course where a key message stayed with me: “The sender is 100% responsible for ensuring the message is understood.” It took time to sink in, but I realized communication is a shared responsibility. When both parties own it, conflict lessens and alignment improves. Root cause analysis, a core part of my work, has trained me to approach issues objectively—minimizing bias and focusing on resolving gaps, not assigning blame.

By learning to identify the causes of disagreements, actively listen to different points of view and facilitate the search for mutually beneficial solutions, a volunteer can prevent the escalation of tensions and foster an environment of collaboration and respect. These skills not only enhance the volunteer experience, but also strengthen team cohesion and, ultimately, the effectiveness of volunteer work in the community
